When the longtime north Modesto restaurant and bakery was abruptly closed in early August because of its parent company’s bankruptcy, many loyal customers and fans of the chain’s famous pies were left bereft. And between 40 to 60 employees were left suddenly without a job.

The 60-year-old Turlock woman has recovered remarkably from a brain-damaging crash, and twice has overcome cancer and the surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments needed to battle it.

Zam, a refugee from Asia who resettled in Modesto, looks forward to the day when he has more family time with his wife and 2 sons. For now, the young business owner works 7 days a week running his sushi and hot wok franchises at supermarkets in Turlock and Tracy. He says he took 1 day off last year — Christmas Day — when the supermarkets were closed.

For about 15 years, 2 Oakdale families have been creating a jack-o-lantern display that’s grown from perhaps 100 to nearly 300 pumpkins. They create a free, walk-through display on Rodden Road that this year will be up from Halloween through the following Sunday.

Mark Hernandez Chacon can’t renew his driver’s license, can’t work, can’t fly, and can’t draw on the Social Security he paid into for more than 4 decades.

At least 3 of Modesto’s elected officials want to spend roughly $380,000 to cover the city’s costs of exploring the potential development of a 200-room, high-end hotel in downtown. But the spending won’t start just yet. That’s because only 4 of the City Council’s 7 members voted on this proposal Tuesday. The vote was 3-1 in favor, but needed 4 votes.

A new state law has enabled a woman who said she was sexually abused by a youth pastor more than 40 years ago to sue him and the Modesto church where he worked. Tracy Epler of Los Osos filed a complaint on Thursday against CrossPoint Church. It was formally called First Baptist Church. Les Hughey was a youth pastor there in the 1970s.

A woman convicted of a crash that killed her teenage sister and released on parole less than a month ago made her first court appearance yesterday in San Joaquin County after she reportedly led police on a chase in Stockton last week. 20-year-old Obdulia Sanchez appeared in a Stockton courtroom in an orange jail inmate jumpsuit. Her arraignment was postponed until November 6th.

First, from the Business Beat: Modesto’s first Ono Hawaiian BBQ has opened to much fanfare, long lines, and plenty of macaroni salad. It’s the city’s only current restaurant to specialize in the island cuisine, particularly its popular barbecue plate lunches.
