Since 2018, the downtown Modesto block has seen a flurry of openings with more projects still planned. Krazy Rolls, the locally owned cinnamon roll bakery which helped kick off the street’s resurgence when it opened in January 2018, has expanded to a second location.

A coalition for medical education convened in Modesto yesterday and discussed what it will take to establish a University of California medical school serving the San Joaquin Valley. Once proposed as a medical school at UC Merced, the plan would commit UC facilities in Merced and Fresno for a medical school to address a severe physician shortage in the San Joaquin Valley.

It’s Wednesday, October 16th. I’m Natalie Gray, and here’s your local news from the Modesto Bee. The latest campaign fundraising reports show Democratic Rep. Josh Harder continues to outraise Republicans in the race by huge margins. Harder raised about $757,000 in the third quarter, ending with about $2 million in cash on hand. He’s raised about $2.5 million total this cycle — making him one of the top fundraising incumbents among both Republicans and Democrats.

Schools in Stanislaus County are faced with making major changes after a bill to provide more sleep time for adolescent students was signed into law. The bill signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom forbids California middle schools from ringing the opening bell before 8 a.m., and prohibits high schools from starting class before 8:30 a.m.

Local school districts were pleased with improved test results at some schools, but the English language and math scores at many schools in Stanislaus County were disappointing. In Modesto’s largest school district, about 31% of elementary school students met or exceeded standards for reading and writing skills and 22% were proficient in math.

Now, the nonprofit art-house theater is expanding for the first time and adding a second screen. Called The Jewel, the small new theater is meant to help diversify the theater’s film selection, and expand its private rental options.

The Stanislaus County Health Services Agency announced yesterday that a Grace Davis High student was diagnosed with active tuberculosis. The County public health officer said her office was working closely with school officials to proactively investigate and test students who may have been exposed.

They were shot to take out surveillance cameras as law enforcement served a search warrant at a big marijuana grow, on Richland Avenue yesterday morning.

Those who ran the half marathon or the 5K at the Peace Officer Memorial Run in downtown Modesto yesterday morning, all brought their own reasons to the starting line. For some, it’s simply a passion for fitness and running. For many, it was to honor fallen officers and, because the event benefits the Peace Officer Memorial Group, which aids the families that survive them.
