Our top story is: Loren Lighthall has settled into the principal’s job at Hughson High School, nearly 9 months after the Camp Fire leveled his house. He had been principal at Paradise High School since 2017, but he could not find a replacement home for his large family amid the disaster. Loren and Rachel Lighthall moved their 7 children, ages 4 to 21, to a town 155 miles to the south.

Our top story is: Modesto’s CrossPoint Community Church settled a lawsuit with a woman who said the church covered up the sexual abuse of her and others by pastors for years. CrossPoint, formerly First Baptist Church, must pay Jennifer Roach $267,500, and was released of any liability or wrongdoing as part of the settlement.

After almost 60 years serving the residents of west Modesto, Bank of America shut down its Paradise Road branch yesterday. The closure leaves residents of the neighborhood west of Highway 99 without a brick-and-mortar bank branch to visit.

Our top story is: A Modesto group announced yesterday that it will provide “safe spaces” to LGBTQ people during the August 24th event planned by the National Straight Pride Coalition. The board of the Central Valley Pride Center decided on that response after a Wednesday evening meeting that overflowed its D Street offices.

The patient was only identified as a female in the news release yesterday from the county Health Services Agency. She was diagnosed with the potentially deadly neuroinvasive West Nile disease, which can result in long-term disabilities.
