We don't talk about how moms are incredible courageous beings, but on this episode of the MomUp Show, I got to chat with Laura DiFranco, author of Brave Healing: a Guide for Your Journey, among many other books.
Laura is a rockstar mom and role model for all moms who are looking to find their inner warrior and voice.
Through her writing, Laura has shared in a way that is incredibly vulnerable, healing, and helpful for women and moms who are going through their own healing journeys.
These are some of the highlights of our conversation, and you can listen to the entire conversation here.
Stop judging. You don't need to assign extra meaning to any "bad" feelings that come up. Instead of judging whether something that is happening, or our feelings about it, are good or bad, just let it be. It is what it is.
Even failures move you forward. At a poetry event, Laura totally bombed. That's gotta be a worst nightmare scenario up there with the dreams about being naked in school, right? You get on a stage to pour your heart out and it all goes wrong.
But Laura was still able to find the positives! During that event she met some of the top poets in the country, which was amazing.
So even things that seem bad, or are actually really hard, might just be a stepping stone on your path.
Sharing what you feel shame about helps dissolve the shame.Laura shares so much in her books that is personal. The reason she does is to "feng shui" her soul as she puts it.
Getting out the feelings and identifying what is going on internally is the biggest step to healing it.
For even more awesome tips and the full conversations, find the MomUp Show on iTunes. More about Laura DiFranco from her website at https://lauradifranco.com/about-laura/:"What do Tae Kwon Do, drag racing and the healing arts have in common? All three are absolute passions of Laura Di Franco, MPT.
Laura has a third-degree black belt and a clear preference for traveling fast and being badass. But she is also the pragmatic champion of small business owners who want to push their health-based practices to the next level but need a little help to do so.
Through her Bethesda-based Brave Healer Productions, Laura offers inspiring speeches, workshops, an online writing club and other services that can help talented health professionals tell their own stories so they too can maximize their professional impact. Laura has a combined social media and email list of 10,000 people that allows her to quickly sell out her offerings and spread her message of health and empowerment.
With almost three decades of expertise in holistic physical therapy behind her, she has written six books including her latest, the aptly titled Brave Healing, a Guide for Your Journey. Shouldn't Laura be helping you with your journey?"
She joined me on the MomUp Show to chat about how moms can navigate the journey through motherhood and how we balance all the demands on us as moms and women.

When Lisa Chin began her journey of entrepreneurship, she thought about what she would pursue even if she didn't make any money. Her choice? Creating a summit on postpartum for moms called the Fourth Trimester Summit.
The passion Lisa had for sharing as much information as possible for new moms spawned from her own experience as a new mom and comparing her postpartum experience to other moms.
After having a natural breech birth, Lisa made the transition to motherhood with the traditional Chinese postpartum ritual of Confinement.
Confinement is when a mother spends 30 days after giving birth relaxing in pj's, bonding with baby, and being taken care of.
Lisa's mom moved in with her for 30 days to help support her and her new family. It was a transformative and beautiful experience for Lisa.
But as Lisa went back to work and started chatting to them about what their postpartum experiences were like, it was a stark difference to her peaceful confinement. According to Lisa, most mothers are treated so poorly in their postpartum period, going back to work as soon as just a couple of weeks after birth.
Learning more about how many mothers struggle so hard postpartum inspired Lisa to start the Fourth Trimester Summit.
As moms, we sometimes walk blindly into our own fourth trimester (the three months after giving birth) with no idea how intense or difficult it can be. The Fourth Trimester Summit is a resource for moms to learn how mothers can have a healthier and happier postpartum.
The importance of building a new community for moms.
We used to have safety nets at moms. There was a village, there was a community for us to lean into during the most vulnerable points of time, like the fourth trimester, and now that is seriously lacking.
Lisa believes the norm nowadays of living in a nuclear family, just parents and children is actually bordering on toxic. Not having that broader support of extended family and community can be quite harmful to all members of the family.
The more we can create community through projects like the Fourth Trimester Summit, the more we can start to combat the isolation that we've created by embracing nuclear families, and help moms thrive during and after the fourth trimester.
Lisa and I talk more about the fourth trimester, all about motherhood, shame, and how we can all grow as moms and a community in this episode of the MomUp Show.
More about Lisa:
Lisa Chin is a multi-passionate mother fervently following her inspirations and curiosities. While jumping from one project to another appears random, she has learned that she can't ignore what her soul is called to create. Motherhood has been the secret sauce that unites her creative work giving her greater purpose as a woman, coach and citizen of this world.
When she is not wrangling spreadsheets or her kids, she can be found writing for her blog, Lisa for Real, where she explores and shares her thoughts on motherhood, fulfilling our purpose and lessons in self-awareness. She is also the founder and host of the Fourth Trimester Summit featuring over 40 sessions for new mamas on how to heal the body and mind, nurture our babies and build our village in the first three months after birth. Taking care of kids is the most demanding job, whether you are a mom or a teacher.
Dan Tricarico is a dad, and has been a teacher for 27 years in the same school, and the same classroom. (and the first dad to be a guest on the MomUp Show!)
He loves what he does and can't imagine doing anything else, but at some point, the stress reached a boiling point. Class sizes grew, there was less funding, the pay wasn't awesome, and Dan needed to figure out how to deal with the pressure so he could do his job and not lose his mind.
As he figured it out, he started sharing how to keep your cool and stay mindful as a teacher through the Zen Teacher.
The response was awesome, and Dan realized it wasn't just him! Teachers all over were dealing with the same issues he was, and now he's sharing his favorite self-care strategies with us so moms can benefit from these self-care ideas too.
Dan Tricarico has been a high school English teacher for over twenty-five years. He is also the author of The Zen Teacher: Creating Focus, Simplicity, and Tranquility in the Classroom (DBC, Inc. 2015) and Sanctuaries: Self-Care Secrets for Stressed Out Teachers (DBC, Inc. 2018). In his spare time, he enjoys writing fiction, listening to music, reading mystery novels, staring out of windows, and watching movies. One of his first loves is writing poetry, and he has published many poems both in print and on-line.

Energy profiling is one of the first things Sabrina asks all moms about. It's a system by Carol Tuttle based on Ayurvedic medicine. Here's a quick rundown of the system.
There are four energy types simple numbered 1-4. While we all have all four energies within us, we are primarily one of the four energies. Sabrina helps parents figure out their children's type so they can better understand and parent their children. Sabrina recommends learning your own type first and then your children's.
A brief description of each type:
Type 1: The social butterfly who can talk to anyone. Bubbly, fun, exuberant, and flutters from place to place rapidly.
Type 2: Emotional, soft, and sensitive this person is a much more slow-moving and comfort-seeking person.
Type 3: Determined, go-getter, and natural-born leaders this type won't stop until they reach the top.
Type 4: Bold, striking, perfectionist, and lovers of balance. They are constantly editing and perfecting everything as they are very meticulous.
Listen in while we try to type me and my kids! Plus, lots of chat about parenting for YOUR child, astrology, and energy.
Sabrina Ivonne is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Holistic Behavior Specialist, triple fire sign, serial entrepreneur, M.O.M, and the creator of the Wildly Grounded in Self-Love Retreat.
She guides, coaches, and supports mothers of children with big responses to life's "normal" stuff including children diagnosed with ASD and ADHD. She teaches them to affect change in your child's behavior through loving, compassionate means. She also guides the entire family to work together for everyone's mutual benefit. She often works with mothers who feel lost and overwhelmed by the enormity of their child's needs and who've lost themselves in the process of raising their children.
Having worked with families for 26 years, she's witnessed countless mothers abandon themselves, their emotional needs, and their spiritual healing. So she created the Wildly Grounded in Self-Love Retreat happening October 16-21 on the Big Island of Hawai'i--- a five-night, six-day luxe feeling + healing experience; a chance to say "yes" to yourself and your true desires in all areas of your life.

One of the hardest decisions as a mom is whether to go back to work, to stay home, do a mix of both, or maybe start your own business. The answer is different for everyone, but for Andrea Thomas, she went from career woman to stay-at-home-mom to building a six-figure business as a stay-at-home-mom entrepreneur.
Before becoming a mom, Andrea Thomas was happy as an architect. But like so many moms, once that little bundle of joy arrived, the prospect of going back to work was just too much. She extended her maternity leave then eventually quit her job to stay at home with her baby.
But surprise! Through becoming a mother, a new life as a stay-at-home-mom entrepreneur was born too. Her daughter had eczema, and Andrea was desperate for a solution to the itching and scratch so her daughter could find rest and comfort. That's when she created flip-mitten sleeves and started ScratchMeNot. Baby and kids products specifically designed to alleviate some of the side effects of eczema.
What started as a small business with Andrea herself even doing some sewing grew into a six-figure business with tons of moving pieces. Not only was Andrea helping her daughter and other kids with eczema find relief, but she had found a new passion to pursue.
We talk about the choices we make as moms, whether and how we pursue our dreams and Andrea's best tip for building a business as a busy stay-at-home-mom entrepreneur.
About Andrea:
Andrea Thomas is the mom of 5, wife to 1, and CEO of a business she loves to talk about in her free business Facebook group!
Her business, ScratchMeNot, began because she knew there were children (besides her own) who needed relief her product provides. Better yet, give a bit of sanity and peace to other parents. This was and still is her mission. Selling products and creating awareness about the conditions this product supports.
Her first book launches soon!
