On 18 January 1982, Imelda Marcos walked up a red carpet in peacock feathers to open the first Manila International Film Festival. Hollywood stars were there. Champagne flowed. The Greek-style temple on Manila Bay was supposed to make the city the Cannes of the East.

Two months earlier, in the middle of the night, part of the building had collapsed on the workers racing to finish it. Rescuers weren't allowed in for nine hours. Some say well over a hundred men died, and that some were never recovered. The architect said seven. Nobody has ever published a list of names.

A 63 year old starts on a 100 mile charity bike ride through the Highlands of Scotland. It was a big undertaking but Tony Parsons had done epic charity events before having walked Hadrian's Wall and the West Highland Way.

Somewhere between the Bridge of Orchy hotel and Tyndrum he vanishes, no sign of him or his bike or any evidence that Tony was even there.Three years go by and there is nothing. Then in 2020 a meeting on Tinder would unravel the whole case.

A case I swore I would never do because it's just so awful but when you visit Illinois on a tour of the US States by true crime and paranormal cases it's sort of hard to avoid. 

This episode comes with all the trigger warnings though I do try to avoid the gory detail it is not for the fainthearted - for lack of a better word, there is no judgement that comes with having to skip this episode. 

Before he was known as one of America's most notorious serial killers, John Wayne Gacy was a respected local contractor, an active member of Democratic politics, and a familiar face at children's hospitals — where he performed in a clown costume he'd made himself.

In this episode of our A-Z of the United States series, we land on Illinois and the case that came to define it: the disappearance of fifteen-year-old Robert Piest, the investigation that followed him back to an ordinary house in Norwood Park Township, and the twenty-nine bodies eventually recovered from beneath it. We go back through Gacy's childhood, the six years of murders that preceded his arrest, and the warning signs — neighbours, employees, a survivor's own detailed report to police — that were there long before anyone connected them.

A tugboat is hit by a huge wave at 4am while Harrison Okene is in the bathroom. As the boat sinks to the bottom he is thrown down an alley away from his colleagues and what happens over the next 60 hours is incredible.
