0.75% IS NOT A FORECAST: Separating IUL Facts From Fear
Social media is filled with alarming claims that Indexed Universal Life insurance is a “scam” and that an IUL policy is guaranteed to lapse because its contract shows a 0.75% guaranteed minimum interest rate.
But is that really what the 0.75% means?
In this episode of Elevating Your Faith, Wisdom and Wealth, we examine what critics often leave out of the conversation. A guaranteed minimum interest rate is a contractual floor—it is not a prediction that a policy will earn only 0.75% every year for the rest of the policyholder’s life.
We also explain why the guaranteed column of an illustration can look so unfavorable. That column uses extremely conservative contractual assumptions, including minimum guaranteed interest and maximum guaranteed policy charges. It represents a worst-case contractual scenario—not necessarily the performance the policyholder should expect.
However, this episode does not pretend that an IUL can never lapse. Any IUL can experience problems if it is improperly designed, inadequately funded, overborrowed, or left without regular reviews. The floor protects the policy from receiving negative index interest during a market downturn, but it does not eliminate insurance costs, policy fees or the effects of loans and withdrawals.
That is why responsible IUL ownership requires:
- Proper policy design
- Appropriate and consistent funding
- Realistic expectations
- Responsible management of loans and withdrawals
- Regular annual policy reviews
- Updated in-force illustrations
As Hosea 4:6 declares, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”
Fear, half-truths and viral headlines should never make a financial decision for you. Before purchasing, cancelling, replacing or borrowing from any life insurance policy, understand the complete contract—not merely one number or one frightening social-media post.
Call to Action
If you would like the guaranteed and non-guaranteed columns of an IUL illustration explained in plain English, comment or message the word KNOWLEDGE.
You may also request a complimentary, no-pressure policy review to better understand how your current policy is designed, how it is being funded and whether it remains aligned with your long-term goals.
Follow the podcast, share this episode with someone who has been confused or frightened by the online IUL debate, and remember:
Knowledge replaces fear with informed decisions. Facts over fear—every time.
This episode is provided for general educational purposes and does not constitute individualized financial, legal or tax advice. Indexed universal life insurance is not a direct investment in a market index. Policy charges, loans and withdrawals may reduce policy value or cause a policy to lapse. Guarantees depend upon the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company.
