A Serious Man (2009) is a Coen Brothers Classic, not just because it has their sharp, comedic dialogue and consistently great acting, but because it’s a thematically rich film that discusses the intrinsically human, “Problem of Evil.”
Jacob’s Ladder is a classic horror film, but it’s a film that contains layers that other contributions to the genre don’t. It makes very valuable comments on the nature of war and how Post Traumatic Stress and paranoia dramatically change the way the world is to the victim.
In this episode of the Monolith Medium Podcast, I read my recent essay, "Annihilation - Authenticity and the Death of the Individual." I also provide a bit of commentary to describe some of the moments in greater clarity than I did previously. In the opening section I discuss the reason that it's so important to give films like Annihilation your time.
Since Stanley Kubrick's birthday happened this week, I decided to discuss my Top Three Favorite Kubrick Films of all time. In this discussion I obviously talk about my favorite films, but I also go into a little bit of detail about Kubrick himself, and what sets him apart. This podcast contains my long awaited Dunkirk hot take and a lot of Kubrick Fan-Boying. So if you're into Kubrick, or if you're not and want to be, or if you hate Kubrick and are a masochist, this podcast is for you.
You Were Never Really Here is an immensely challenging film for audiences and it's resulted in a lot of polarization. In this podcast, I dive into the relevant details and come away with an important thesis from Director Lynne Ramsey.
Raw is about as inaccessible as great horror gets. It's narrative content deals with a subject so horrific, that it distracts from the major themes at work in the film. This is to the film lovers' benefit, as a deep look into the film exposes such interesting questions about the nature of the uncivilized society. In this episode we talk about dehumanization and civilization.
In the inaugural episode of the, "What The Hell Did I Just Watch?" Podcast, I go into great detail discussing the multitude of dichotomies at work in Paul Schrader's incredible film, First Reformed. We dive into some Calvinist Theology and discuss the final, transcendent scene, that both shocks, and baffles audiences.
