The werewolf, mythological bloodthirsty beasts who cannot control their lust for killing people and animals. They can be found in countless books, films, and movies. Most often portrayed as a cursed shape-shifting human who unwilling takes on the form of a wolf. One of the oldest legends of human monsters in history. Werewolves often play second fiddle to vampires and zombies and terms of Pop Culture man-monsters but they have a long a rich history in the dark reaches of our nightmares. Today we're going to break down the very real historical events of wolf attacks that set into the lore the myth of our Silver Screen Horror MVP.

The murder of Rasputin, Russia’s infamous “Mad Monk,” is the fodder for a great historical tale that blends fact and legend. But the death of the controversial holy man and faith healer had a combustible effect on the tense state of affairs in pre-revolution Russia.

When he rose to power he thought he could do anything (which also happened to be true). He was in essence “above the law.” Anything and everything that Rasputin would do, was “right” in the eyes of Alexandra. Anyone that did not agree with that, was considered to be committing an act of treason, by Alexandra. Since the Tsar and Tsarina were so close to Rasputin, and Rasputin was so deeply hated the Russians began to question the Royal family’s authority. As a result of that testing of authority, it was easier for Communist Russia to rise. Rasputin was a very powerful man, with a great intelligence.

And if he would have used his power for good rather than evil, he could have been one of the most powerful leaders known to date. Even though this great man was able to hide his “true” self from the Tsar and Tsarina, he was not able to hide the way he really was from the Russian people. And because of that, everyone in Russia knew about his evil ways, except for the Royal family, who were too blinded by the health of their son Aleksey.

From murdering children to drinking blood, Peter Kürten was "the king of the sexual perverts" and perhaps the worst serial killer ever. His crimes included burglary, arson, attempted murder, rape, cannibalism, and murder. The list of his victims surpassed 30 and could have been anywhere from 35 to 70.

Known as the Vampire of Düsseldorf and the Düsseldorf Monster, Kürten spent almost 20 years fulfilling his deepest, darkest desires. That all caught up to Peter Kurten when he was beheaded for his crimes in Cologne, Germany on July 2, 1931. If ever you find yourself on vacation in the Wisconsin Dells, visit the Ripley's Museum to see Kürten bisected head on display. After his execution, doctors decided to open Kurten’s head to see what was wrong with him. His behavior was so disturbing, they believed his brain had to be physically different from the average person. His head was mummified, then bisected to get to the brain.

Forensic analysis found nothing abnormal.

Kurten’s head came to the United States soon after the end of World War II. It became part of the personal collection of Arne Coward, an antiques dealer in Waikiki with a morbid sense of humor.

The Axeman of New Orleans was an American serial killer active in New Orleans, Louisiana from May 1918 to October 1919. Press reports during the height of public panic about the killings mentioned similar murders as early as 1911, but recent researchers have called these reports into question. The perpetrator was never identified, and the murders remain unsolved.

The Axeman of New Orleans plagued the residents of New Orleans from May 1918 to October 1919. This serial killer’s weapon of choice was none other than an axe, though never the same exact one. And often, the Axeman of New Orleans would use whatever was available, like a hatchet, straight razor, or butcher’s knife.

Though he killed about a dozen people with such instruments over the course of a year and a half, he was never caught.
