This is Black History month - a time to expand our knowledge about historical black figures that helped shape Canada. This morning we're kicking of a series focusing on the contributions of famous Canadian figures with a black history expert and member of The Order of Canada, Robert Small. This week we're focusing on two important figures from Eastern Canada, Viola Desmond and Sam Langford.

We begin with our weekly conversation with Mercedes Stephenson, Global News Ottawa Bureau Chief, and Host of the West Block. Mercedes brings us the latest on the ongoing ‘trucker protest’ in Ottawa, and details of ‘snap’ leadership vote aimed at Erin O’Toole of the Conservative Party.

Then, we continue our conversation on the protests in the Capital. We speak with Gil McGowan, President of the Alberta Federation of Labour. McGowan tells us that the trucker Rally does not represent the “vast majority” of his membership.

Next, we head to Southern Alberta, for the latest on the blockade at the Coutts border crossing, now into its 4th day. We speak with Global News Reporter, Heather Yourex-West.

Finally, today marks the beginning of the “Lunar New Year,” we hear what’s being planned to celebrate the holiday here in Calgary from Ward 7 City Councilor, Terry Wong.
