In this episode, I'm chatting with Dr. Christina Runyan and Dr. Joan Fleishman, psychologists and co-founders of Tend Health. They're breaking barriers in healthcare by providing accessible mental health services. These powerhouses are asking the question - "What's the cost of NOT providing these services" to physicians and other healthcare professionals. Dr. Runyan is also a mindfulness teacher at the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness. • Episode 37: Facing Your Own Darkness with Dr. Rola Hallam - humanitarian and coach

Rola and I were in tears several times as we shared and I listened to her incredible story and advocacy. Listen to her sage advice about physician identity and burnout. You'll be inspired by her wisdom and journey of burnout to advocacy to humanitarian work.

Rola was born a doctor. She just didn't know that her home country of Syria would shatter into a million pieces, killing over 30 members of her family and that she would wield her voice, stethoscope and humanity as weapons greater than bullets and bombs. Dr Rola is an award-winning physician, humanitarian, campaigner, speaker, social entrepreneur and coach. She's the first Syrian TED Fellow and the founder of CanDo - a humanitarian organization supporting frontline health and aid workers to save children’s lives in their war-devastated communities. She has helped build 7 hospitals in Syria, including the first-ever crowdfunded hospital, altogether serving over 4 million people. As a global advocate for health and human rights in conflict, she has shared the stages with presidents, celebrities and grassroots activists. She is a TED and Google speaker, and her work has been featured in most media from the New York Times to The Daily Show including two BBC documentaries. Her online talks have been seen over 11 million times, inspiring thousands to become change-makers. Rola believes the world needs more visionaries, idealists, rebels and troublemakers- people who stand up, speak out and lead for change. She is on a mission to make this a reality, to support people facing illness, injustice and indifference and not just survive but thrive. After recovering from burnout and trauma, Dr Rola emerged a warrior embodying the power of Rumi’s poetry “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I Am changing myself”

  • {Replay!} Dr. Ken Ginsburg Creating Compassion Through Relationships

Friends - if you missed this episode early-on, you're in for a treat!

In her debut podcast launch, Dr. Amy engages in a riveting discussion with Dr. Ken Ginsburg, a pediatrician with 35 years of experience. Dr. Ginsburg is a resiliency expert who focuses on building trauma awareness in medicine, establishing tools and resources for providers, and shifting the lens from what is “wrong” with patients to what is “good and right” with them.

During this hour-long podcast, you will get to explore a different perspective when it comes to treating kids who have experienced trauma. More importantly, you’ll learn how to reframe the conversation with your patients and explore positive ways to deal with trauma. You’ll learn that you can advocate for resiliency, instead of framing a patient as “broken” You’ll also learn not to take it personally and how to avoid changing the narrative for your own perspective.

As providers, you will need to be there for the critical moments in your patient's lives. This captures all the elements of your patients’ lives, whether it be the good or the bad. However, after listening to this podcast, you’ll learn how to focus on the good, so that when the bad does happen, your patients will be well equipped to handle it.

Dr. Ginsburg is the Founding Director of CPTC and Professor of Pediatrics at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He travels the world speaking to a parent, professional, and youth audiences and is the author of 5 award-winning parenting books including a multimedia professional toolkit on “Reaching Teens.” CPTC follows his strength-based philosophy and resilience-building model.
