SPECIAL THANKSGIVING EPISODE

A two-part message- from the past- for each and all of us this Thanksgiving.
1) the importance of perseverance
2) the importance of friends
3) the importance of working together

This is not a long or stuffy official message. It is not from a famed or even a noted historian. It has not been approved or reviewed by a board or anyone for that matter. It is simply a message of hope for a world that seems to always need some. 

No politics were used in the creation of this message - just three books and years of study on the subject. Also present is the wholehearted and fully accepted belief that many opinions can exist and that little in life is black and white and that much is gray. 
May we focus on the glass being half full and may we do our best to keep on the sunny side of life and each other. 

With a humble heart - may we all give thanks - even, and especially when it is the darkest...

Harry is a rare and blessed one indeed - 

Join us for a delightful discussion with a truly amazing man - Mr. Harry Lawrence. A graduate of the Caulkins School, then Lookout Mountain Elementary, then Baylor School, then Washington and Lee University and UT Memphis Medical School and then Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Hear how his family was a very familiar household name in Chattanooga for decades as their family business served many folks. Harry shares about his service in the armed forces and how it led him to his ultimate vocation in medicine. He even helped to oversee the residency program for new eye doctors here in Chattanooga for many years - and loved it. Harry also shares about what the Episcopal Church has meant to him over the years and how the’ hound of heaven’ finally came for him. Also powerful in Harry’s life has been his work abroad and he kindly shares how he served through medical missions around the world. 

Claiming he is 92 years young, you have to hear this amazing man, - he surely means 29, not 92! 

Please don't miss his advice for each of us as we navigate today's troubled world.

Residents of both town communities are invited to attend the "Lookout Says 'Thank You'" event at Canopy coffee from 9 until 10 am Wednesday morning October 4. 
This is the Lookout version of the national Coffee with a Cop event that is held nationwide on the first Wednesday of October in communities across the nation. 
The first event of this national program on Lookout was back in the fall of 2020 which was handled as a coffee drop off event due to the COVID pandemic and social distancing. 
This year will see the return of the Lookout Mountain version of this event which is more than Coffee with a Cop but rather, coffee with EMS, Fire and Police - all together. Both Georgia and Tennessee communities are of course a part of this event and both Chiefs plan to attend as well as some of the new members of each department. 
Lookout Mountain has been very fortunate in so many ways and one of those is certainly that we have well trained and certified first responders especially in the medical field.

Dedication:  This special ‘public servant/ law enforcement’ episode is dedicated to four of the finest public servants from this area: Bill Roy(decd.), Vietnam, Tenn Highway Patrol, US Postal Service and host's uncle; Virginia Roy Newberry(decd.), Hamilton County Sheriff’s Dept. and host's Mother: Mike Stro, Vietnam and Chatt Police Dept(TN Police Officer of the Year) and host's father, and his(Stro) co-worker/ teammate Chuck Wells Chatt Police Dept./ Lookout Mtn Police Dept.(Chief) and host's friend. These four all served our general community very admirably and with many, individual awards and distinctions, as they have exemplified lives of distinction through service and dedication despite the danger. 
We thank them for their service.

And to former Chief Wells: we are so proud, and grateful, of your service and especially of your personal journey fighting illness and the brave example you have set for others in our community. Thank you.

The torch passes from Chief Wells to Chief Schermerhorn- Hear about some new happenings in our community one of which is the Knox Box system. 

Our New Lookout Mtn(Tenn) Police Chief - Duane Schermerhorn

What do you need? From EMT to Chief of Police, or, Band-Aids to Bullets, he's got you covered!
A son of some of the best examples of public service and community servants - teachers and military, Duane was a very blessed child to have such loving and wonderful role models as parents. Did you know his mother was among some of the first female captains in the U.S. Marine Corps? This little boy was going to behave! 
Listen in on this great episode and hear about the person, his life experiences and his rationale for where he is today and how he serves our community. 

Lookout can certainly claim our new Chief as ‘our own’ after 20 years of service in our community and many interactions with residents over that two-decade timeline of service. Beginning as a patrol officer and having served all roles now, including Chief, Duane and 15 others make up the 24/7 team that serves our neighborhood. 

Listen in and hear the surprising twists and turns of this conversation and learn about what makes us a very unique first responder team here on Lookout. 

After hearing this episode, you will certainly understand more about both Duane and our LMPD system. Did you know Duane was a U.S. Navy Seabee? Those are tough jobs!

Hailing from Peidmont, AL, husband of Stephanie, father of a son, a multiple-degree holder in subjects such as History and English and others, this fella wears a lot of hats. 
Since 2019, he and his family have lived in our community on Lookout - just behind Rock City.  His amazing wife Stephanie is a key member of the team at Lookout Pres. and works with their Missions effort. She truly has a heart of gold. 

In honor of Chattanooga and the national military park here, tME is releasing this much anticipated episode on Saturday, August 19th, the exact-to-the-day anniversary of the formation of the park here. The Chattanooga and Chicakamauga battlefields were the FIRST in our nation to be preserved and Chris does a masterful job of telling that story. 

In this episode, hear about many items including: Chris' family serving in the war, Chris' search for his life's calling, The movie Gettysburg and how it impacted Chris, President Benjamin Harrison serving as a soldier in Chattanooga under Sherman, how eight thousand students visited our park here one year, how the first Medal of Honor recipient was here in the Chattanooga battles, the huge importance of Chattanooga in the war, and more. 

This year, 2023, marks the 160th anniversary of the battles in and around Chattanooga(1863) - and here on Lookout Mountain! Hear about the plans and events coming to Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain this fall.

As Chris says, 'This is your park, this is our park', and 'this is a place that may make some people uncomfortable', and ' we are here to preserve and protect this place for generations to come'.

And to the famous and so-loved local ranger who has served this area with excellence for so long, Jim Ogden....Jim, 'Watch Out! - this guy is GOOD!'

Humility and service are two words that quickly come to mind when one thinks about Brooke Pippenger. In her own words, she likes 'helping people, solving problems and valuing people'. Married to Andy, they moved to Lookout to raise a family - and boy have they.  Living in their 'cabin in the woods' in the town of Lookout Mountain, TN, these two have parented three wonderful children in our dear community.  The daughter of an Air Force service member, the genes to serve are very ingrained with Brooke.  For years, Lkt GA has had Kenny Lee, and now Lkt TN has Brooke!

The Lookout town charter does not allow for a 'Town Manager' so Brooke is serving in the role of a 'Town Consultant' and a year into the new role, she is learning and helping with communication and Mayor Walker Jones must be very happy about this new help in town governance.  Recruited by Mayor Jones, Brooke was happy to help out. Brooke has never met a stranger and she is very approachable all while combining a sincerity and humility that make her perfect for public service. She even gives out her phone # and email in the podcast! 

Listen in and hear why Brooke is a very special person and why her style and skills are so well suited for her new role. Brooke of course praises fellow teammates such as Joe Hailey, Belinda Allen and Duane Schermerhorn. 

Here's to Year 2 being a great one, so let's all give Brooke a big Lookout cheer of support as she continues to make an impact and improve the function of town government here on Lookout Mountain.

She's headed north folks! With Georgia in the rearview mirror and Tennessee ahead, this lady is LMS bound - and boy are we lucky. 

A career educator, this lady is passionate about two things - the Lookout Mountain community and her mission of educating children. 
Just from what little time we have spent with Emily, it's doubtful this educator has yet to meet a challenge she didn't rise to meet. 
Energy, drive and passion, all describe our new Principal. 

Please join the Mountain Echo as we bow in respect and gratitude to Ruth White and we stand to honor the hard work and accomplishments of both Emily Haney and Missy McKenna to the roles of Principal and Assistant Principal, respectively. Wow - two decades have passed since Ed and Erma Caballero arrived on Lookout and began their time as the innkeepers at our very own Garden Walk Inn, and now, they are retiring and ready to pass the torch. These two, love people and they love to offer food and shelter to travelers from all around the world and from our own neighborhood. 

Strong in their faith, these two have been truly blessed, and they have been true blessings to so many over the years. Originally from Columbia via Los Angeles, and even Las Vegas, Ed and Erma have been residents here on Lookout Mountain for over two decades now. Raising a close family of three children, they found a way to make it work despite the challenges. Everyone worked and helped out as their and its cottages has been a waypoint for thousands over the years. Hear how they used this amazing piece of land and its whimsical cottages to make a living and to offer grace and help to many local families in times of need.  

In this episode, we recognize, celebrate and honor the work Ed and Erma have done in our community for over two decades.  Even though the future of the Inn is uncertain, let us show that our feelings and gratitude for these two and their service, is not.
