Karen interviews bass trombonist, Kyle Moore. They dive into his professional and personal music career. This 30-minute episode is carried by laughter which shows their easy-going friendship. From childhood to college, and beyond- you won’t want to miss this episode!

Moore grew up near Jackson Mississippi and began his musical journey at just six. Starting with the piano, he took lessons with a strict instructor that would not let anything slide. This was great for him! Then, fast forward to middle school he was introduced to the school band. “A french what?” claimed Moore as he decided to focus on the Trombone. 

Being pushed to learn and grow further with music, Moore decides to take his advisor's advice and started seeking out music opportunities outside of his school. Trombone days became a necessity and he and his father started traveling to attend symphony shows. It was not long before the college visit began when he decides to commit to Southern Mississippi University. 

Involved in various programs and groups at college, Moore was exposed to different aspects of the music industry. He realized there were far more jobs in the business that play at bars until 2 am and becoming a personal piano (various instruments), instructor. He then fell in love with the idea of applied professors as he claimed, “This job is unique, unlike any other career I have seen!” It seems to be a very important time in a musician's career. They are in need of some form of assistance, whether that be for inspiration, dedication, or just personal growth. 

Karen claims she would have no questions when assuming Kyle was an extravert- surprisingly, this is not the case! Moore has long drafted his skill to become what he calls an “extroverted introvert”. While it was not easy by any means, years and years of practice and experience in social settings has made him out to be a personable individual. 

While Kyle Moore continues to grow his professional musical career, he also has a wide pallet of interest. An avid yogi, coffee lover, and great conversationalist are all aspects of Moore’s life that tie into his love of trying new things. “Just go for it!”

Karen loads this 10-minute episode with various useful tips and tricks on how to effectively network during this holiday season. It can be overwhelming if you are not an outgoing person but luckily she breaks it down step by step and provides a way to avoid the anxiety and stress that is normally paired with socializing. 

Throughout the holiday season, you are sure to find yourself at such an event. Whether it be an office party, CD release, or intimate event there are three points Karen never forgets. 

1. Learn People's names
2. Have a Game Plan
3. Let People Talk About Themselves

These may seem like simple points to remember, but they are truly crucial to successfully attending a social networking event. First off, simply learn the names of people you are talking to. Karen gives credit to her husband Nick for this point. It may be hard to truly memorize names but it shows that you are attentive and invested in the conversation. The conversation will become more fluid and intimate if you show the person you are talking to that you are truly listening. Karen loves the quote, “The most beautiful sound that all of us have heard is simply our names.”

This will drop walls that people have and allow them to feel more comfortable in opening up to you about far more than just service level content. While it is a difficult task at larger events it should become a priority of yours. It does get easier as you practice and eventually it will become a habit that others will soon try to adopt. It will not only help you hone in on the current conversation but it will also create a relationship between you and a possible client. 

Next, is to have a game plan. By this, Karen does not necessarily mean to have a mapped out detailed plan of your night. She means to have an idea of what your role or place is at the party. Are you going to meet new friends, are you going to recruit ambassadors, or are you going to reach new clients? Despite the type of event, it is a good idea to determine your purpose for networking before you walk in the door. 

At any event, it can be overwhelming to walk into a room of unknown faces. If you are prone to social anxiety, it is also a good idea to have a plan before you walk in. Will you greet the host first? Maybe say hello to a friend? Whatever it is you can find a way to cope with your anxiety. Find a smell in the room right when you walk in and fixate on it. You can even play iSpy by yourself in your head to distract yourself from feeling anxious. It is not crazy to have a game plan as it can truly he

The holiday season can be stressful when it comes to separating yourself from work when you love what you do. Being a workaholic is more common than most people would like to admit- it’s not a bad thing as long as you maintain the perfect personal and professional balance! Karen jumps into the holiday anxiety and how to best prepare yourself to avoid it this holiday season. This is a great listen for any event, holiday or special season!

The Four Key Points

1. boundaries 
2. organization
3. accountability 
4. time & solitude

With these four points, Karen claims you can successfully separate work and the holidays leaving you less stressed and anxious. Boundaries are the first most important aspect as they are the building blocks to allow the 3 other aspects to work. 

Create boundires with you and others. Remember how important it is to sleep, let your body rest! But also make sure others know what your intentions are this season. This will help prevent miscommunication- one of the biggest reasons for holiday problems! While it may come off as a assertive, letting others know what your plan or interests are helps people prepare for what to expect out of you. 

After creating boundaries it is important to know how to use your time. By that I mean, wisely. While you do not need a precise schedule it is important to keep in mind that everyone has different plans for the holidays. You want to spend time with your family and friends who matter the most and it is important that you organize your time while prioritizing your interests. 

Next is accountability. Karen is a firm believer that if you say you’re going to do something you must follow through. It not only reflects badly on your character but it also creates tension with others. This hold yourself to a higher standards and makes you seem more reliable to others. While that being said so, it is also important to set realistic goals. Make sure to follow through, but do not stress about something during the process if you’ve planned and organized accordingly.

The last point is time and solitude. Anything in life can be overwhelming, the holidays are just a great example of it. While remembering to put others first it is also important to realize that you cannot fill someone else’s cup until you truly fill your own. By this Karen means you can’t truly take care of someone else unless you take care of yourself. She relates this to the oxygen masks in the airplane.
