According to the National Eating Disorders Association, "Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by weight loss (or lack of appropriate weight gain in growing children); difficulties maintaining an appropriate body weight for height, age, and stature; and, in many individuals, distorted body image" (National Eating Disorders Association, n.d.)
When I use the term "anorexia" in this episode, I referring to Anorexia Nervosa. I use its more colloquial form for ease of access and understanding for the general public.
When I refer to the DSM-5, I am referring to the criteria required to be diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa, according to the DSM-5.
To create this episode, I used information provided by the National Eating Disorders Association which can be found here: https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/learn/by-eating-disorder/anorexia
Note: All episodes in this series are designed to be a general overview of the condition focused on in the episode. There may be a variety of different "levels" or "subcategories" to these conditions. The things I talk about are simply what is most common in people with this condition. Everything I say is based off of information from reliable, accredited sources. Due to the ever-evolving state of psychiatry and the treatment of mental conditions, I will not be looking into specific current or possible treatments.
