Audiobook narrators bring a world of performance experience to their work, but we don’t always get the credit that other performers receive. This week, we’re going to crack open the craft of audiobooks with our guest Eunice Wong as we remember the true power of our work behind the mic.

There has been an interesting expansion and contraction in narration opportunities over the past 20 years, from a handful of studio-based actors mostly in LA or New York, to a huge wave of new at-home narrators joining the industry. What does the current landscape look like to a narrator with decades of experience? And what does it look like to someone just starting? In this episode, we welcome veteran Hillary Huber and newcomer Dara Brown to discuss what the audiobook industry looks like from both perspectives.

As narrators, one of the hardest parts of finding success in the industry is discovering our unique voice. And for us, the word “voice” can be used literally and metaphorically. What do I sound like AND what do I want to say through my work? How much of myself can I bring to each story? Is there an audience for someone who sounds like me? We welcome Gillian Williams to the roundtable to discuss finding your voice.

This week we welcome the accomplished narrator, director, engineer, and owner of Reaping Audiobooks to the table to discuss what we can learn from all the humans who play a part in creating an audiobook, the importance of sensitivity readers, and the current, as well as potential, ups and downs of AI in our craft, and how we can all look out for each other by cultivating more mutual respect and understanding.

At-home narration is more prevalent than ever, and working from home has its pros and cons. When you aren't in a controlled space being guided by professionals who are also helping to ease the burden of audiobook production, even a small distraction can result in lost productivity. How can narrators use what they've learned as actors to get back into the right head space? How can we advocate for ourselves when we need assistance to be our most productive? And is worrying about pickups contributing to our inner saboteur?

When we’re asked for a “neutral accent” or “no accent” what does that even mean? How can we all be more thoughtful in our approach to accents and dialects? In this episode of The Narrator Roundtable, we dive into the larger implications of which accents are asked for in audiobook narration, how they are asked for, when and why they are asked for, and how to approach them with nuance, respect, and service to the stories we tell.

We welcome the host of The Narrator’s Cup of Joe, Daniela Acitelli, to the roundtable for a frank discussion about working with co-narrators. It’s a delicate and challenging relationship to maintain, and it’s often long-distance, accomplished only through email, and can be with a total stranger. The rules are both simple and vague. There is oversight but with a lot of independence. So what should a narrator do when they don’t feel good about a working relationship with a fellow narrator?
