In Matthew 7:24-27, we study Jesus’ exhortation to put his words into practice. Those listening to Jesus’ sermon on the mount heard what he said, but not many did what Jesus said. How true is that today? We must not think that Bible intake is good if it falls short of Bible application. We need to pursue daily obedience to Scripture. Our sinful inclinations drive us toward worthless pursuits so we need to strategically work to apply the Bible. May we put a plan in place to be obedient to Scripture every time we read, study, or listen to it.

In Genesis 6:5-8, we study the actions that led to judgment by God through the flood. What caused this great act of punishment? Skeptics of Scripture look to the Fall, the Flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, the Conquest, and eternal hell to say the Bible is full of evil. They discredit the Bible because they claim these events show the injustice and brutality of this “God of the Bible”. Through Genesis 6, we can see that these punishments by God in the Bible are not unjust punishments but are just retribution for human sin. Furthermore, in the midst of judgment God shows undeserved grace.

This week we studied Ephesians 2:1-10 and remember the sermons that Pastor Mike preached at Revival 2022. We are not born into a right relationship with God but are dead in our sins. We are ruled by our sinful passions and desires. In spite of our sin and wickedness, God showed us love, grace, and mercy through Jesus. Because of the work of Jesus, we can respond to the offer of salvation with repentance and trust. We are not saved through our merit, but by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. As a result, Christians live out a life of obedience to Christ from a heart that is transformed by Jesus.

In Psalm 119:97-104, we study the love of God’s Word that is clear in this passage. Believers are to cherish and be excited to be in God’s Word. Unfortunately, the Bible is viewed by many today as boring and confusing. This causes great apathy and disinterest in Scripture. Psalm 119 states clearly the benefits that come from Scripture. Wisdom, understanding, and growth come from the Bible—so we should love it. We can cultivate a greater love of Scripture by studying it, understanding it, and rightly putting it to practice.

In 2 Timothy 3:14-17, we study the usefulness of Scripture. The Bible is not only impactful to its original audience but is practical and valuable for every person throughout human history (regardless of age, background, and geographical location). The Bible teaches us the truth, exposes wickedness, and points us to rightful living. If we want to be effective Christians for God’s kingdom we need to daily be in the Word. We should seek to cultivate a heart that loves God’s Word and desires to follow its commands completely.

In Numbers 23:19, we study the truthfulness of God and his words. God is completely different from man in that he always speaks the truth. God has given us his message in Scripture which is without errors. The Bible is not only error-free but is incapable of erring. Believing in an error-filled Bible is an affront to God and his nature. Many will claim to find errors and contradictions in the Bible, but by studying Scripture we can affirm the Bible’s truthfulness. May we read and study God’s Word often to respond to the lies propagated about Scripture.
