Rachel Jablow (IG: @get_roped or www.getroped.com) coaches jump rope classes full time in Chicago, spreading the jump rope flow and helping her clients make some serious fitness gains. As she describes during our conversation, Rachel’s drive to pick up a rope really started with utility. She wanted to get the most impactful workout done in the least amount. Of course, she was hooked after she started (as were the rest of us). We talk about this at length, and many other subjects, including advice for somebody starting a fitness class, changes in the fitness industry, dry needling muscle recovery, overcoming nervousness as a coach, and a whole lot more.

Celina Furman (IG: @celina.rea) is a lifelong competitive and performance jump roper, with an extensive history in the sport. She also was a founding member of the A2 jump rope club at the University of Michigan. On top of that, Celina is also completing a PhD in Social Psychology.  

Celina and I both have an incredibly specific and detailed approach jump rope training. We’ve both spent a large amount of time digging into the weeds of athletic programming, and come to the table with a similar mindsets. We get into many topics, including alignment corrections for young jumpers, pin trading at jump rope competitions, applying weight training programs to jump rope, favorites places to jump, and a lot more.

Devin Meek (IG: @devin_meek_ YT: WeJumpRope) is an accomplished competitive jumper, best known for his phenomenal creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. He truly redefines how to use a jump rope, commonly referred to as the "King of Floaters" by many in the jump rope community. For those that are unfamiliar with Floater skills, we cover them at length in the episode. 

We cover a lot of ground in our conversation, including the impact of social networks on the jump rope world, stretching and warming up, how to cultivate and grow creativity, tips for better floaters, the most common reactions competitive jump ropers hear when they discuss their sport, and a whole lot more. Just a heads up that at about 45 minutes in, we get into the weeds about video editing and content creation. If that doesn’t strike your fancy, feel free to fast forward a few minutes or so.

“When you teach, you learn even more.” — Adrienn Banhegyi

Adrienn Banhegyi (IG: @adriennbanhegyi_jump or www.adriennbanhegyi.com) is an incredibly polished jumper and knows how to put together difficult sequences and make them look easier than a single bounce. As you will hear, she has quite the extensive history with jump rope. With over 26 years of experience in the sport, Adrienn brings so much great insight and information to the table during this conversation. She has competed on an international level. She’s done many large scale performances, including many TV spots and jobs with Cirque. And on top of this, she’s worked as a personal trainer and has practiced several different fitness disciplines, including TRX, Bosu ball training, group classes and more. Needless to say, Adrienn shares a gold mine of jump rope knowledge, and I’m really excited all of you to absorb it. We cover all sorts of topics, including her research with coaching group jump rope classes, strengthening the mind with jump rope, coaching special needs children, her business Jump Plus World, and a whole lot more.

Two weeks before this episode originally aired, which was mid-June 2019, Mike Fry and I held a jump rope workshop in Los Angeles, California and had a whole bunch of local jumpers come out. It was an absolute blast, and at the end, we decided to test out a new live podcast format. So, in this episode we’ll hear from several jumpers. We start with a brief interview with my friend Fausto, and then we transition into a round robin style of Q&A where anyone at the workshop can ask anyone else a question. This episode is shorter than usual, but we still get into some interesting topics about how boxers use jump ropes, what my favorite jump rope skill is, and what it feels like to win a world jump rope championship.

“We had the motto, ‘Practice Like You Compete.’ […] It’s so simple but it’s not.” — Michelle Fongson 

Michelle Fongson (IG: @matellispanelli) is a world champion jump roper and one of my early jump rope mentors. Not only does she have extensive jump rope knowledge, but she also has a degree in kinesiology with a very detailed and rigorous understanding of body movement and function. Michelle has used this knowledge in all of her coaching, including working with CrossFit Athletes, a competitive jump rope team, and more. We dive into her coaching philosophy and get very detailed with the methods she’s used to train her athletes for competition. In addition to this, we discuss mindset—specifically the thought process and mental reminders of training to win. There are many, many takeaways in this episode for anybody looking be more competitive and adjust the way they think during training.

Avery Ansah, (IG: @the_ansah) is a former competitive jump roper, and is best known as the jump rope artist. He has a vast skill set, but is best known for his extremely intricate manipulation and wrapping combinations. Definitely stop by his Instagram page to check it out!

We talk about how jump rope rewires a person’s mindset, the struggles that every jumper faces learning new skills, how Avery’s theology degree and faith has shaped his jump rope journey, the two factors that allow Avery to learn skills quickly, and so much more. We also take some time to discuss a darker portion of Avery’s past, when he was using narcotics. He was kind enough to explain a bit of his experience and how jump rope was a significant positive force, helping him recorrect his decisions.
