1. Guinea-Bissau
Guinea-Bissau soldiers announce Gen. Horta N’Ta as junta leader
Soldiers in Guinea-Bissau yesterday announced a new junta leader for the country, cementing a forceful takeover of power that began after the country’s presidential election.
The military high command inaugurated Gen. Horta Inta-A as the head of the military government, which will oversee a one-year transition period, according to declaration announced on state television.
2. Tunisia - Tunis
Tunisia frees prominent lawyer Sonia Dahmani, a critic of the president
Tunisia freed prominent lawyer Sonia Dahmani, a vocal critic of President Kais Saied, on Thursday after a year and a half in prison and she said she hoped her release would pave the way for dozens of other critics to walk free.
Dahmani, who is also a media commentator, is widely seen as a leading dissenting voice in Tunisia, and her arrest last year prompted local protests demanding her release and international criticism.
3. Nigeria – Abuja
Tinubu declares security emergency as kidnappings rock Nigeria
Facing a kidnapping crisis, President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday ordered an overhaul of Nigeria's security forces.
He also authorized the recruitment of an additional 20,000 security personnel on top of the 30,000 already approved.
"The police will recruit an additional 20,000 officers, bringing the total to 50,000,” the statement read. “My fellow Nigerians, this is a national emergency, and we are responding by deploying more boots on the ground, especially in security-challenged areas,” it added.
4. Malawi- Lilongwe
Court Issues Warrant to Search Chakwera's Home Over Alleged Illegal Possession of State Security Dogs
The Senior Resident Magistrate's Court in Lilongwe has issued a search warrant authorising Malawi Police to search the residence of former President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera over allegations that he is unlawfully keeping four State-owned security dogs.
