1.    South Afrika – Zambia 

South Africa’s top court dismisses Lungu family appeal in burial dispute

The Constitutional Court of South Africa has dismissed an application by the family of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu, dealing a major blow to efforts to overturn a ruling ordering the repatriation of his remains for burial in Zambia.

 

2.    DR Congo- Qatar - Doha

DR Congo, M23 rebels resume talks in Qatar after renewed violence in east

Qatar’s foreign ministry said delegations were meeting in Doha to review the implementation of a truce signed in July.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the M23 armed group have resumed negotiations in Qatar as violence deepens in the country’s mineral-rich eastern provinces in spite of a recently signed an agreement to reach a full peace deal.

 

3.    France – Madagascar 

France returns three colonial-era skulls to Madagascar

In a significant move 127 years in the making, France has taken steps to return the remains of a slain king to Madagascar.

The French government has officially handed over the skull of King Toera, along with three additional skulls believed to belong to members of the Sakalava ethnic group.

 

4.    In our historical archives, it was on this day 27 August 1986, when a crowd of more than 500 marched to council offices in Soweto, demonstrating against evictions which had been carried out after an eleven-week rent boycott.
