Celebration and protests: Nigeria marks 26 years of uninterrupted democracy

Nigeria commemorated 26 years of uninterrupted democratic rule on Thursday since the return to civilian governance in 1999.

But the day did not call for celebration in the minds of all Nigerians: in major cities like Lagos and Abuja, hundreds of protesters took to the streets to voice their dissatisfaction with what they describe as the failure of successive governments to deliver the true dividends of democracy.

THE University of Zimbabwe (UZ) has withheld the salaries of striking lecturers as turmoil continues at the institution.

The lecturers have now reached 58 days of industrial action, demanding a salary increase that aligns with Zimbabwe's soaring cost of living.

 

4.    In our historical archives, it was on this day 12 June 1964 when the Rivonia trial eight of the accused were sentenced to life imprisonment in the Pretoria Supreme Court.

The eight were Nelson Mandela, the central figure in the trial, along with Dennis Goldberg, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, James Kantor, Andrew Mlangeni, Elias Motsoaledi and Raymond Mhlaba.
