1. Angola – China 

Angola’s national airline, TAAG, has re-launched a weekly service from the capital, Luanda, to the Chinese city of Guangzhou.

The first flight, operated on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, touched down this week, marking the official inauguration of the direct passenger service.

It is currently the only direct, nonstop flight between the two countries, with Luanda serving as a key node in China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Zimbabwe Senate approves bill to extend presidential term

Zimbabwe's Senate this week overwhelmingly approved controversial constitutional amendments that would keep President Emmerson Mnangagwa in office until 2030, giving the changes full parliamentary support after earlier consent from the lower house.

3. Niger – International Criminal Court 

Niger Quits ICC, Deepening Debate Over Court's Legitimacy

The government of Niger has formally withdrawn from the International Criminal Court, citing concerns about what it described as selective justice, raising fresh questions about the court's legitimacy and effectiveness.

The withdrawal, announced this week, makes Niger the third country to withdraw from the ICC, after Burundi and the Philippines.

The decision marks another significant policy shift by Niger's military-led government, which came to power following the 2023 change of government. 

Since then, authorities have increasingly emphasised national sovereignty and sought to distance the country from what they describe as externally driven political and institutional frameworks.

Non-alignment must not be conflated with neutrality

The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation notes the recent public statement attributed to the United States Ambassador. While the South African Government does not engage in public disputes with resident envoys, these remarks necessitate a clear reaffirmation of our guiding principles.

As a sovereign nation, South Africa pursues an independent foreign policy firmly anchored in the principle of non-alignment. Non-alignment must not be conflated with neutrality; we refuse to be drawn into geopolitical contestations or be pressured to take sides.

 Instead, we prioritise inclusive dialogue, global peace, and our own national interests.

5. In our historical archives, it was on this day, 26 June 1967, that Theophilus Doctorson Khumalo was born in Soweto, Gauteng. He was also a leading member of the South African national team that won the 1996 African Nations Cup. He also represented South Africa in the 1998 Football World Cup
