1. Mozambique -Maputo
Mozambique’s newly installed President, Daniel Chapo has appointed Maria Benvinda Levi, a former judge and Minister of Justice, to the post of Prime Minister, leading a team in which only the Minister of National Defence, Cristóvão Chume, was in the outgoing government.
2. United States of America – Jamaica (Afrika Diaspora)
Biden posthumously pardons Black Nationalist Marcus Garvey and Holness hails Garvey’s pardon as ‘a proud and historic day’ for Jamaica
Outgoing President Joe Biden yesterday posthumously pardoned Jamaican Black nationalist Marcus Garvey, who influenced Malcolm X and other civil rights leaders and was convicted of mail fraud inthe 1920s.
3. BRICS- Nigeria
Nigeria becomes the ninth BRICS partner country
Brazil’s government said on Friday that Nigeria has been accepted as a partner country in the multinational BRICS group.
This adds Africa’s largest economy to the growing alliance of emerging market countries.
4. Tanzania – Dar Es Salaam
Tanzania's ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), passed a resolution on Sunday endorsing Samia Suluhu Hassan and Hussein Ali Mwinyi as the party's official candidates for the Union and Zanzibar presidential elections, respectively.
5. In our historical archives, it was on this day 20 January 1987 when the mysterious death of Mozambican late President Samora Machel led to the first hearing of the Margo Commission on 20 January 1987. Machel’s plane crashed near the South African border under suspicious circumstances, prompting widespread speculation about the apartheid government’s involvement.
