1. Tanzania- Dar es Salaam 

Tanzania building collapse: Rescue efforts continue as govt vows stern action 

Rescue efforts at the site of a building collapse that killed at least 16 people in Tanzania’s commercial capital entered a third day on Monday. 

The number of people trapped was unclear, but several people have told local media that they have lost contact with relatives who they believe were inside the building. 

2. Mozambique - Maputo 

Mozambique's Renamo calls for vote to be annulled, caretaker government 

• Renamo on Monday called for Mozambique's election to be annulled and a caretaker government to be installed. 

• It was displaced as the main opposition party by Podemos, according to the official count. 

• The Constitutional Council has not yet confirmed the result. 

Mozambique's long-time opposition movement Renamo said Monday that last month's disputed elections must be annulled, adding to rejection of the vote that has sparked weeks of deadly protests across the country. 

 

3. Burundi - Bujumbura 

Detainees released in Burundi as part of effort to reduce overcrowding in prisons 

All prisoners charged with minor crimes must be released within two weeks to ease overcrowding in Burundi's prisons. This was the ultimatum that was recently given by the country's president. 

477 prisoners have been released from the Muramvya prison. Of 13,211 prisoners, 5,442 will be freed, representing 41% of the prison population. For the president, its the chance for those freed to contribute to the country. 

 

4.  Botswana- Gaborone   

On November 19, 2024, Botswana’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) will be held at 14:00 at the Parliament chambers, an event eagerly anticipated by citizens and political analysts alike.  

This annual address, delivered by His Excellency Adv. Duma Gideon Boko, serves as an important platform for outlining the nation’s progress, discussing challenges, and presenting strategic plans for the upcoming year. 

5. In our historical archives, it was on this day 19 November 1981 when ANC Veteran and Apartheid activist Griffiths Mxenge was brutally murdered 

Griffiths Mxenge, an African National Congress (ANC) veteran and apartheid activist, was assassinated and his body was severely mutilated in an act of barbaric brutality on 19 November 1981. His murderers used three okapi knives, a hunting knife and a wheel spanner because they were ordered not to kill him with a gun. 

Flysafair responds to interview from Friday by Phutego Mojalepe- An aviation analyst who was warning that the South African government may need to step in and take a stake in FlySafair to recover funds lost due to contravention of foreign shareholding regulations. FlySafair is facing potential sanctions from the International Air Licensing Council (IASLC) after being found in breach of these restrictions, as a significant portion of the airline is owned by Ireland's ASL Aviation Group.

On Monday, the Human Sciences Research Council released the first national gender-based violence Prevalence study.  It shows 36% of women in South Africa - an estimated 7.8 million - have experienced physical and/or sexual abuse at some point in their lives and that 24% - an estimated 3.4 million - have experienced it at the hands of an intimate partner.
