The SACP in the Eastern Cape has denounced the Anc-led government of national unity due to the inclusion of the DA. Following its three-day meeting last weekend, the party said that as long as the DA was involved, the SACP in the province had no intention of working with the GNU.

1. Botswana – Gaborone  

Duma Gideon  Boko has been sworn in as President 

At exactly 5.35pm, November 1st 2024, Duma Boko took an Oath of Office of the President to became the sixth leader of Botswana. 

The small swearing in ceremony, conducted by the Chief Justice Terence Rannowane at the Gaborone High Court chambers was witnessed by few government officials, pastors, close family members and media. 

 

2. Kenya – Nairobi  

Kindiki Sworn in As Deputy President, Replacing Gachagua Who Was Impeached 

Kithure Kindiki has officially been sworn in as Kenya's third Deputy President, succeeding Rigathi Gachagua, who was impeached following a fallout with President William Ruto. 

The swearing-in took place at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) after a three-judge bench lifted the conservatory orders that had barred Kindiki from assuming office. 

3. Mauritius – Port Louis 

Mauritius blocks social media until after election amid wiretapping row 

Mauritius has cut access to all social media platforms until November 11, a day after its upcoming general election. 

The move on Friday came amid a wiretapping scandal, and even as the opposition raised the alarm about an alleged ploy by the governing party to avoid defeat at the polls. 

The office of Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth said the restrictions were necessary to preserve national security and integrity, following the publication of “certain” audio clips. 

4. Ethiopia – Tigray  

2 years after devastating Tigray war and Pretoria agreement ,  is peace within reach? 

Ahead of the two-year anniversary of the end of the Tigray war, Gebreselassie Kahsay, a lecturer at Mekele University in Tigray's capital, reflected on the fragile peace in Ethiopia's northernmost region. 

"Some say the Pretoria agreement stopped the gunfire, but the genocide hasn't ended. Genocide is still being committed against Tegaru [Tigrayans]. 

5. In our historical archives, it was on this day 4 November 1960 when Liberia and Ethiopia instituted legal proceedings against the then apartheid SA concerning the administration of Southwest Africa, again in the International Court of Justice.

1. Botswana - Gaborone

Winds of political change blowing in Botswana 

THE opposition has taken a significant, if not unassailable, lead in the Botswana elections, with indications the only party that has governed since independence 56 years ago would surrender its position. 

It is the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) of Duma Boko that has opened the lead, in an effort to unseat the former liberation movement, Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), led by incumbent President Mokgweetsi Masisi. 

1. Kenya – Nairobi 

A high court in Kenya has given the green light for a new deputy president to take office despite a continuing court case challenging the impeachment of the previous deputy president. 

The three-judge High Court in Nairobi set aside another court's order to suspend the swearing-in of nominee Kithure Kindiki, arguing that the suspension created a political vacuum. 

1. Zambia – Lusaka 

8 miners dead, 1 missing after a mine collapse in Zambia 

Eight miners died after being buried under mounds of earth that collapsed on them in an open-pit copper mine in Zambia, police said. 

One miner was missing and another two survived, provincial police commissioner Peacewell Mweemba said. State media reported that six of the miners who died at the mine in Chingola, a city in Copperbelt Province, were from the same family. 

 

1. China – Zimbabwe 

A Zimbabwean delegation led by Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Deputy Minister Kudakwashe Mupamhanga is currently in China at the invitation of the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe. 

Their visit commenced on October 26 and will run through to November 3 as the two countries continue furthering people to people exchanges.

Over the years, various organisations have petitioned for Diwali to be converted into a public holiday, but previous efforts failed to receive favourable attention from the government. Dr Sheetal Bhoola has now said that making Diwali a public holiday would boost social cohesion
