Botswana decides 2024: Masisi aims for second term       

President Mokgweetsi Masisi is the favourite as he looks to clinch a second term in the Botswana General Elections taking place on October 30. 

Masisi, leader of Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), is expected to defeat his top opponents; Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), an opposition coalition that came second in 2019, and Botswana Congress Party (BCP) as well as newly established Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) with ease, as his party has been in power since 1966 when the country gained independence from Britain.

Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) killed at least 124 people in a village in El Gezira State this weekend, activists said, in one of the deadliest incidents of an 18-month war and largest in a spate of attacks in the state.

1. Mozambique – Maputo 

Mozambique's ruling party retains power in contested election 

Mozambique's ruling party Frelimo has retained power in this month's national election, extending its five-decade rule in the Southern African state as the opposition accused it of fraud. Chapo won over 70% of votes, the electoral commission said on Thursday.  

Venancio Mondlane, backed by the Podemos party, came second with 20% of votes, displacing former rebel movement Renamo, which had been the official opposition party but whose candidate came third this time around. In the parliament, Frelimo increased its number of seats to 195 out of 250, more than the 184 it had before.

Jonathan jets out to Botswana: Real reason behind his trip 

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is scheduled to depart for Gaborone today to lead the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) for Botswana’s general elections, set for 30th October 2024.

 President announces creation of commission to oversee Constitutional revision, but Does the Democratic Republic of Congo need a new Constitution? 

President Felix Tshisekedi is of this opinion. He announced this week that “a commission will be set up next year to work on the matter."

Zimbabwe is unambiguous in its unequivocal call for the removal of sanctions, President Mnangagwa has echoed. The country will be joined by the rest of SADC in commemorating the Anti-Sanctions Day that will be accompanied by solidarity marches, speeches and musical shows today
