1. Yesterday was Soweto Uprising Day/ Youth Day and the Day of the Afrikan Child ( DAC) in
Afrika - The theme of the DAC 2024 has two major components: ' education for all’ and ‘the time is
now’. The aspect of ‘education for all’ is key because the African Charter on the Rights and
Welfare of the Child under Article 11(1) states that ‘Every child shall have the right to an
education’. Education is the right of all children in Africa equally despite their location, race,
parental status, disability, gender, and any other status.
2. DR Congo – Rome, Pope Francis called on national and international authorities to take action
to stop the bloodshed in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo following a week in which
dozens were killed in the North Kivu province. At the end of his weekly Sunday prayers on St
Peter’s Square, he said the victims included many Christians.
3. Niger court scraps immunity of deposed President Bazoum, Decision opens door for military
government to prosecute democratically elected president for alleged ‘high treason’. The top
court in military-governed Niger has lifted the immunity of the country’s deposed president,
Mohamed Bazoum, paving the way for a possible trial nearly a year after he was overthrown by
mutinous soldiers.
4. Rwanda Publishes List of Presidential Candidates With Only Three Names Retained. The final
list of candidates for Rwanda's elections on 15 July has been published. There are only three
candidates including the incumbent President, Paul Kagame. The other two candidates include
Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, (DGPR) and an independent candidate,
Philippe Mpayimana.
5. Historic Ugandan artifacts return home for three years, After over a century away, 39 Ugandan
objects have returned home. The University of Cambridge is loaning the traditional artifacts to the
east African country for an initial period of three years. But what meaning can these objects which
range from tribal regalia to delicate pottery hold now for the people who carved them?
6. Angola Becomes First Country to Join African Criminal Court. Angola has officially become the
first African Union member state to ratify the statute of the African Court of Justice and Human
Rights, known as the Malabo Protocol. Fourteen other AU countries still need to ratify the statute

7. In our historical archives, it was on this day 17 June 1992 when the Boipatong massacre took
place in the Midvaal. Approximately 300 armed residents of the Inkatha-aligned Kwamadala hostel
shot and hacked their way through the Black township of Boipatong (Johannesburg), leaving
forty-six people dead and scores injured, including women and children.
