1. Sudan – Ethiopia
Sudan has withdrawn its ambassador to Ethiopia following tensions between the two neighbouring countries.
Ethiopia and Sudan have traded accusations that each has violated the other's territory by supporting insurgencies.
“Regarding Ethiopia, we have decided to recall our ambassador there for consultations, as is standard diplomatic procedure in such matters,” said Sudan's army-aligned Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem.
2. France – Rwanda
France’s Paris Court of Appeal yesterday ruled that investigations should resume against Rwanda’s former first lady for her alleged “complicity in genocide”. Last year, a lower court dismissed charges that Agathe Habyarimana had played a role in the 1994 genocide, saying there was “insufficient evidence” against her. Now in her late 80s, she has lived in France since being evacuated by French paratroopers in the early days of the killing spree. It was triggered by the assassination of her husband, the former Hutu president of Rwanda, Juvénal Habyarimana.
3. Uganda - Kampala
Uganda’s parliament has passed a contentious new law, critics warn could be used to silence dissent, despite last-minute amendments aimed at softening some of its provisions. The so-called “Protection of Sovereignty Bill” was approved late this week after a heated debate, with lawmakers backing changes that removed a clause classifying Ugandans abroad as “foreigners” and exempted certain institutions — including medical, academic and faith-based organisations — from restrictions on foreign funding.
4. In our historical archives, it was on this day, 7 May 2006, when the former Transkei Prime Minister, Minister of Public Enterprise and Public Works post 1994 in South Afrika, Mme Nomzamo Stella Sigcau, passed away at Durban's St Augustine Hospital at the age of 69. United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa extended condolences to Sigcau’s family and friends, saying she was a mother figure for many. ” [This] was a role she took seriously, and I recall that she would always call me ‘young man’ whenever we met. “Hamba Kahle Manyawuza!”
