A 73 year old pensioner has been sentenced to 20 years in jail for raping an 11 year old girl and to 8 years for attempted rape. He attempted to rape the 11-year-old victim once and raped her twice between November and December 2014.

Five suspected rhino poachers have been arrested at the Kruger National Park’s Malelane section in Limpopo. Their arrest follows the discovery of two rhino carcasses covered with grass and twigs – apparently to hide and delay their discovery.

Tshwane African National Congress chairperson, Dr Kgosi Maepa, has called on the Executive Mayor of the City, Stevens Mokgalapa to step down. Maepa says Mokgalapa has disgraced the City after an audio recording surfaced in which he’s heard gossiping about his colleagues with Member of the Mayor Committee for Roads and Transport, Sheila Senkubuge.

Parliament's standing Committee on Public Accounts, SCOPA chairperson, Mkhuleko Hlengwa says they have asked Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula to urgently finalize the appointment of a permanent Board at the Passenger Rail Agency, PRASA. PRASA's interim Board and executives were kicked out of a SCOPA meeting last night when they failed to answer critical questions. Committee members wanted to know why there were no minutes and records of decisions the Board had undertaken during the 2018/2019 financial year, despite receiving financial compensation for these meetings.

ACDP Chief Whip Steve Swart has called for Parliament's Home Affairs Portfolio Committee chairperson Bongani Bongo to step down pending the outcome of his corruption case. The Hawks arrested Bongo on allegations that he tried to bribe then evidence leader Advocate Ntuthuzelo Vanara to frustrate the Parliamentary inquiry into Eskom. Government says it has failed to reduce plastic litter despite introducing legislation to reduce plastic waste in 2003. The legislation increased the thickness of plastic to be used and charged consumers a levy when buying plastic bags. However, this did not help in reducing the use of harmful plastic products and litter. The department of Environmental Affairs is currently holding a two-day plastic colloquium in Johannesburg to see how they can address this crisis.

Transnet has concluded a 10 years take-or-pay transportation of coal agreement with Ledjadja Coal (Ledjadja) to haul 3.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of export coal from the Boikarabelo Coal Mine, which is situated in the Waterberg coalfield of Limpopo in Lephalale to the Richards Bay Terminal Grindrod (RBTG) in KwaZulu-Natal. The mine has the objective of loading its first coal to the port from 1 June 2022.
