Sudan’s ruling council and rebel leaders have commenced peace talks aimed at ending the country’s multiple conflicts. Thousands of people have been killed in Sudan’s civil wars, including the conflict in the western Darfur region, where rebels have been fighting the government since 2003.

The trial of four men accused of killing former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa has postponed to April 2020. The case will now be heard in the High Court in Pietermaritzburg after being transferred. The matter had been set down for trial from today to November the eighth. The case has been dogged with several delays as three of the accused were not properly represented.

While launching the SAPS Men Mobilisation Awareness Campaign today, Minister Bheki Cele vowed to deploy more police officers over weekends as this is the time when crime is at its highest. Police Union, Popcru however is against this move. The Union in a statement said that it is concerned about the Minister’s involvement in operational matters. Today the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) released its Annual Report for the year ended March 2019. CCMA received a total of 193 732 cases during the 2018/19 financial year, compared to the 186 902 referrals of the preceding financial year. Of the total cases, approximately 71% related to unfair dismissals followed by 11% on unfair labour practices.

Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi, says the Department of Education has put strict measures in place to ensure cheating in the exams is curbed. Lord Peter Hain is calling on the British government to follow the US government’s lead in imposing sanctions on the Gupta family for their role in South Africa’s state capture. He is arguing that the financial crimes in which the Gupta brothers have been implicated have been widely documented, including in evidence given to the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture.
