Today, the SABC released the findings of an Independent Commission of Inquiry into interference in the decision making in Newsroom of the SABC (“the Report”) between the years 2012 and 2017.The inquiry was established in May last year following reports from the public protector, a parliamentary inquiry and complaints from civil society.

The report into editorial interference at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) was released yesterday by Dr Joe Thloloe. The commission tasked with the investigation dealt with a number of allegations, including personal favours in the newsroom, and within the SABC. It found that the public broadcaster was crippled by pain, anger, and fear due to the improper use of power and authority.

Rhino poaching numbers have gone down – what can this success be attributed to? The Ministry of Forestry, Environmental Affairs and Fisheries has revealed that in the first six months of 2019, 318 rhino were poached countrywide, a modest decline of 68 incidents over the same period last year. Another positive development is that, from January to June this year, 122 alleged poachers were arrested in the Kruger National Park. Nationally, 253 arrests were effected in respect of both rhino poaching and rhino horn trafficking.

News coming from Zimbabwe suggests that Zim Government has struck a deal to pay R213.3m to Eskom to receive 400MW of power from SA's power utility. Eskom and Zimbabwe's government had been locked in talks for weeks to strike a power deal, as Zimbabwe is currently experiencing a severe power shortage with load shedding of up to 18 hours a day. The power crisis has forced some Zimbabwean companies to shut down.
