Relief organisations have brought supplies to the fire ravaged Setjwetla informal settlement in Alexandra north of Johannesburg. About 300 shacks were razed to the ground by the fire after a City Power electricity pylon fell on them. City Power says preliminary investigations have not confirmed that the collapsed pylon caused the fire.

Taxi commuters say they will be severely affected should the ranks of the WATA and NANDUWE taxi associations be shut down. Yesterday, Gauteng Transport MEC Ismail Vadi said he intends to close the ranks for three months following ongoing route violence between the associations. Six people were wounded yesterday during an exchange of gun.

Afriforum has not yet filed an appeal regarding the sentencing of the two Coligny farm workers Phillip Schutte and Pieter Doorewaard in the so called sunflower murder case. The organisation indicated during their arguments in mitigation of sentence last month that they would file an appeal. Schutte and Dooreward were given 18 years and 23 years in prison respectively. Afriforum described the testimony of the sole state witness Bonakele Pakisi as unreliable and as having been paid to tell lies.

South Africa's economy grew by 1.4% in the fourth quarter of 2018, according to Stats SA this morning. The figure of 1.4% was slightly above the consensus estimates of most analysts and economists of 1.2% growth. This means that annual real GDP increased by a tepid 0.8% in 2018. This was 0.1% more than the projections of most economists

EFF leader Julius Malema tabled the motion. The party says due to the contribution Madikizela-Mandela made to the liberation of the country the airport should be renamed after her. Three grade eight learners have been suspended from a Soweto high school over the alleged rape of a fellow learner. The alleged rape happened while the learners from the school were attending an orientation camp in De Deur in the Vaal at the weekend.
