Higher Education and Training minister Naledi Pandor today appointed Dr Randall Carollissen as the administrator of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). He appointement is effective one year and will see him take over the governance, management and administration of NSFAS.

It’s been reported that Emfuleni local municipality in Gauteng is in trouble again – this time almost all of its vehicle fleet has been repossessed by a service provider who was not paid its dues by the council. Apparently the municipality defaulted on payments on vehicles leased from Bidvest.

Police today confirmed that one person had died and another four have been injured in incidents of “mob justice” in Daveyton over the last two days. Apparently, police received information that there were three men that were being assaulted by the community.

A new global forecasting system says the world is likely to see more extreme temperatures in the coming four years as natural warming reinforces manmade climate change. Following a summer of heatwaves and forest fires in the northern hemisphere, the study in the journal Nature Communications suggests there will be little respite for the planet until at least 2022, and possibly not even then.

The protesting residents of KaNyamazane are demanding that President Cyril Ramaphosa descent to their township to address them. Yesterday they refused Premier Refilwe Mtswheni and her entourage entry into the township. Police had to use rubber bullets to disperse the unrelenting protesters who demand that hail storm damaged houses be repair immediately.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa(Numsa) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has said they weren’t prepared to sign an agreement with Eskom following threats that disciplinary action will be taken against workers who took part in an unprotected strike during wage talks. In a turnaround of events- NUM today accepted the three-year wage offer from Eskom, conditional to Eskom not disciplining illegal protesters.

Six years after the Marikana massacre, it has emerged that striking mine workers did not attack police at “the small koppie”, despite police testimony of protesters having shot at police. This is according to new Institute for Security Studies (ISS) research, which was released today.
