Minister of Health, Dr Joe Phaahla held a media briefing earlier today to update the public on the outbreak of Mpox disease and outline plans by the department in collaboration with various stakeholders in the sector to curb further spread and prevent mortality. The Minister said five cases have been confirmed in South Africa so far with two of these cases in Gauteng and three in KwaZulu-Natal. One death has so far been confirmed and that was a patient that died at the Tembisa Hospital on Monday, June 10. A global outbreak of Mpox disease, formerly known as Monkey pox, has been ongoing since 2022.
