Telkom, the state-owned telecommunications company, has recently declared and completed a $357 million sale of its cell phone towers. 6200 mobile towers make up Telkom's vast portfolio of communication infrastructure, which is managed and operated by Swiftnet, owned by Telkom. It appears from observation that mobile providers are increasingly selling off their cell phone towers, and Telkom is not the only one doing this.

Rand Water will be embarking on a 37-day maintenance regime that will see days-long water disruptions hitting parts of Gauteng on a set schedule. According to the water utility, it will be embarking on “an extensive proactive maintenance of its infrastructure” from 22 June to 29 July 2024.

Transnet Port Terminals and business grouping the South African Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF) has hit back at a report by the World Bank and rating agency S&P’s that ranked four South African ports as among the worst in the world for efficiency and competitiveness. Transnet and the SAAFF claim that the report was limited in its focus and missed a large number of boats, and was thus flawed.

The Container Port Performance Index released last week saw Cape Town, Nqura, Port Elizabeth, and Durban fall into the bottom 20 of global port rankings for performance. Cape Town was also placed last in the list of 405 ports, becoming the least efficient port in the world, according to the index.

Last week, the University of the Free State announced the accreditation of its medical programme by the Republic of Korea. The University of the Free State benchmarks itself against both local and international institutions and this affirms its place as one of the top-tier medical schools in the world. An alumnus from the university succeeded in getting the university officially approved as a recognised foreign medical university in Republic of Korea. His administrative efforts finally paid off in May this year, when the UFS joined the list of the few prestigious South African as well as international universities to be granted this status.

Lawyers for the uMkhonto we Sizwe Political Party have sent a letter of demand to the Secretary of Parliament, Xolile George and Chief Justice Raymond Zondo asking both offices to refrain from convening the first sitting of parliament. MK Party lawyers have said that failure to comply with the letter of demand would result in court action.
