The South African Police Service's Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Shadrack Sibiya, says that kidnapping for ransom is growing gradually in the country. His remarks are backed by the findings of the recent report that was released by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime which revealed that South Africa is among the top 10 countries with the highest rates of kidnapping in the world. However, security and strategy expert, Andy Mashaile says he is not surprised by Sibiya’s comments as thousands of SAPS officers have been arrested for various crimes since 2019.
