Members of Parliament in the UK have voted in favour of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda. However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing as some Conservative hard-liners who are opposed to the bill in its current form, argue that the policy does not ensure that people who arrive in the UK without permission can be deported, as it would allow them to challenge their expulsion in both UK courts and at the European Court of Human Rights. Labour party voted against the bill, along with other opposition parties, and they made it clear that they will scrap the controversial policy if they win the next election.

The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements has demolished over 200 shacks that were built on illegally invaded land in Palm Ridge. In December last year, the invaders took occupation of the department’s serviced stands that were meant for its Ikageleng Rapid Land Release Programme. According to the department, the invaders also illegally connected themselves to electricity, water and the sewer system and had caused damages to public infrastructure.

Accused, Zandile Mafe will not stand trial for his involvement in Parliament Fire that took place on 2 January 2022. While the Western Cape High Court ruled he is not fit to do so due to the psychiatric report findings, Zandile Mafe has to undergo this process twice at different facilities. 

Today, we wanted to have a conversation about what constitutes mental fitness to stand trial and what psychiatrists at mental facilities have to undertake concerning establishing a report for a person who has committed a crime and has been ordered to undergo this process. We also wanted to know how much of a toll it takes on the person going through the process and if he is not proven to be fit to stand trial, what happens next?
