A teenager has been stoned and burned to death in KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga. The 17 year old is alleged to have been a ring leader of a gang that has been terrorising communities in KwaMhlanga and surrounding areas. Ballistics expert Chris Mangena has told the High Court in Pretoria that Senzo Meyiwa was shot at close range. Meyiwa was shot and killed in 2014 while at Kelly Khumalo's parental home in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg. Five men are currently on trial for the murder of the soccer star. Mangena who has served 29 years in the police service - examined both the crime scene and Meyiwa's body at the Germiston mortuary. Pearl Magubane

A team of researchers from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California have delved into the biological processes that facilitate lizards’ remarkable cartilage regeneration. Their study found that - lizards regenerating their tails could actually boost efforts to achieve similar results in human cartilage, paving the way for treating osteoarthritis and other degenerative conditions.

The Qhubeka Trust closed its doors this month after making payments to over two thousand former gold mineworkers who were diagnosed with silicosis. This was the entity’s biggest settlement in South Africa, with over R420 million spent in payments. The trust was set up in 2016, however, claims by former mineworkers who contracted lung related diseases were first made in 2012. There will still be many cases like this going forward, what are some of the lessons from the years of compensating former mineworkers. We’re now joined by Dr Sophia Kisting-Cairncross, Chairperson of the Qhubeka Trust, she’s also an occupational disease specialist.
