In conversation with Moipone Jwayi from the Free State Rural Women Assembly Agroecological Hub about the role that food gardens play in addressing food insecurity in the country. Jwayi is one of the owners of a women owned food garden in the Free State, called  ‘The Free State Rural Women Assembly Agroecological Hub’ that was established in 2017 and is run by a group of 19 women who are tirelessly fighting hunger in their community.

The death of a grade 9 pupil at Queens High School in Johannesburg has brought back the issue of bullying at school. 15 year old Brian Ndlovu died last week after he was allegedly ambushed by other boys in the bathroom and given poison.  The principal at the school says there is no prior record of the boy being bullied before this incident. Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane visited the school today. We’re now joined by Gauteng Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona.

Over 60 people have been arrested following ongoing violence against motorists and damage to government property as the taxi strike continues in the Western Cape. Two people have been killed so far and three have been injured. Some clinics have been closed as healthcare workers couldn’t make it to work. How is the situation now? As tensions between the Western Cape Government and Santaco grow. Equal Education says they are deeply concerned about the impact the ongoing taxi strike by the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) is having on learners and school communities in the province and they are urging government to find an urgent solution to the current situation.

World News: A deadline set by the West African regional bloc, ECOWAS, to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum has expired and Niger's coup leaders have decided to close the country's airspace until further notice, citing the threat of military intervention from their neighbours. They have also made it clear that Niger's armed forces are ready to defend the country should the ECOWAS decide to deploy military force.

A healthcare worker at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital was assaulted with a hammer and robbed of her cellphone in a lift in the premises of the hospital. The staff member was rushed to casualty after the culprit managed to escape. It is not clear whether or not the culprit was also a patient at the hospital. We're now joined by Tabudi Madisha, spokesperson for the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital. 

Brics health ministers have signed a declaration following a four day discussion. Among the things discussed, is the need to establish a Brics Nuclear Medicine, to reduce oncology diseases and improve the life quality of palliative care patients.. The ministers also agreed to build a TB research network to reduce the burden of TB in Brics member states. Health Minister, Dr Joe Phaahla says through this platform, there is an opportunity to make our voices heard as BRICS countries as we build our hard negotiated goals towards the universal health agenda. Following the SIU’s announcement that President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the unit to investigate allegations of maladministration in the affairs of the office of the Premier in KwaZulu-Natal. Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube says her office will cooperate fully with the SIU - however, she has denied claims that she is being probed for wrong-doing, arguing that the proclamation clearly states that it covers allegations of unlawful and improper conduct that took place between 1 April 2007 and 29 July 2023, and therefore it is not targeted at the Premier personally.
