The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services says the use of cellphones by inmates in prison is a criminal offense. This follows reports of videos on social media platforms like Tiktok where alleged inmates have been seen doing live streams in correctional services uniform. Cellphones are banned from prison, to prevent inmates from planning their escape with people outside. The department of correctional services does spot checks to ensure inmates are not in possession of cellphones, it is therefore not clear how the alleged inmates in the Tiktok video had access to a cellphone and data. Suspended public protector advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane has just briefed the media on allegations of bribery by some members of the section 194 enquiry looking into her fitness to hold office. During the briefing Mkhwebane also released the alleged audio recordings between her husband, David Skosana and late ANC MP Tina Joemat-Pettersson. The recordings also implicate ANC Chief Whip Pemmy Majodina and chairperson of the section 194 enquiry, Richard Dyantyi as the other role players in this alleged web of corruption. Will the African National Congress ever recover from the fallout with its former Secretary General, Ace Magashule. Magashule’s issue has cause some differences in the party, with some saying the issue could have been handled differently, especially considering that it’s almost elections. The ANC announced its decision to expel Magashule from the party after he failed to provide reasone why he shouldn’t, following his suspension. We’re now joined by Mavuso Msimang, ANC Veteran.

Gun violence in the Western Cape continues to be on the spotlight. Two police officers have been shot and killed in two different incidents in Cape Town. A 36-year-old sergeant based at the Elsies River Police Station was shot while driving in Site C in Khayelitsha and later died in hospital, and  a sergeant based at Nyanga killed when unidentified gunmen opened fire in Mandela Park in a suspected robbery. At the same time, it looks like tensions are heightening again in the taxi industry following the shooting of another taxi operator in Paarl, following the killing of a taxi boss last week.  We’re now joined by the Western Cape’s MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen.

The report suggests that one in four coloured employees will have to be replaced in order to meet the Minister of Labour’s sectoral targets.
