The City of Johannesburg’s Group Corporate Shared Services has been allocated R1 billion in this financial year. The city’s R80.9 billion budget was passed yesterday concerns raised during the debate about tariff increases. The budget for Group Corporate Shared Services increased by 118.8%. This department is the engine that keeps the city running, in charge of labour relations, finance, fleet and contract management and administration among other structures. The city has been marred by leadership woes that have made it harder for services to be delivered, how will this budget be utilised to meet the needs of residents? As of 1 July 2023, junior doctors should be starting their community service training program. However, hundreds of junior doctors who have completed their internship have not been placed in hospitals within the province. The group of doctors were meant to be notified by 13 June 2023 but have still not heard from Gauteng Department of Health. Affected doctors have shared that the program is compulsory and they are unable to apply for other positions (as medical officers) without completing the additional program. The City of Cape Town is responding to a train of destruction caused by heavy rains and strong winds. Trees have fallen into roads, disruption the flow of traffic in some areas and rivers are overflowing, causing severe flooding throughout the city. A law that led to loss of citizenship for South Africans who choose to acquire another country’s citizenship through a voluntary and formal act other than marriage, has been declared unlawful and unconstitutional. The ruling by the Supreme Court of Appeals follows an application by the Democratic Alliance on behalf of South Africans who unknowingly lost their South African citizenship after acquiring a second citizenship in other countries. While handing down the judgment, Judge Dumisani Zondi said depriving people their right to citizenship with no regard for their individual circumstances and the reasons that they are taking out another citizenship is both unfair and capricious.
