As police officers probing the Scottish National Party’s finances continue their search. Scotland’s former first minister, Nicola Sturgeon has pulled out of a planned speaking event that is due to take place this evening. Her decision comes after her husband was questioned by police, who are currently investigating alleged irregularities in relation to the ruling party finances.

Another strike is looming in the bus industry as negotiations have deadlocked between the South African Bus Employers Association, the Commuters Bus Employers Association and trade union, Numsa. Numsa says the two organisations have failed to meet demands that include a 8% salary increase and medical aid for all employees. The two will meet the South African Passenger Bargaining Council after failing to reach an agreement. We’re now joined by Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, Numsa spokesperson.

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research says the South African economy loses an estimated R2.2 billion each year to cybercrime. The organisation says more than half of South African companies have been victims of ransomware in the past year. It also says there is a skills gap in the cyber security industry, leaving over 80% of organisations in South Africa exposed.

What should we make of the constant reversal of government decisions due to public outrage over the past few months? Government has reversed the decision to exempt Eskom from regulations that require State Owned Entities to disclose expenditure that does not comply with the provisions of the PFMA. National Treasury says the withdrawal was made to allow for a period of further engagement and written technical input from all relevant stakeholders on the matter. If you remember, the R22 million flag decision by former Arts and Culture minister, Nathi Mthethwa was also reversed and recently, the Tottenham Hotspur deal by the tourism department was also reversed. Members of the South African Commercial Catering and Allied Workers Union continue their major strike against employer Makro, over an alleged dismissal of 600 workers and looming retrenchments. The workers today stages a strike outside the US embassy in Pretoria. The strike is now on its 10th day and the workers picketed outside the embasy today because Makro is owned by Walmart, a US based company. The demands also include a 12% salary increase for all workers. We’re now joined by Mike Tau, Second Deputy President of Saccawu.
