The Economic Freedom Fighters says it is ready for Monday’s nationwide march against the ongoing power crisis and worsening economy. Different organisations have pledged support for the march while some are against it.  Government has responded as well, police minister Bheki Cele today urged police to ensure there is no repeat of the 2021 July unrest where businesses were looted. President Cyril Ramaphosa yesterday said the South African National Defence Force would be on standby to protect South Africans.

Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has appealed for more assistance from international partners and donors in the face of destruction and damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Freddy. While on the other hand, UK based lawyer and journalist Peter Makossah has questioned the effectiveness of the African Union and SADC structures in assisting those affected by tropical storm Freddy, asking – “where is the African Union, where is SADC and above all else where are African countries and why can’t they join forces and provide the necessary help?”

THE INNERVIEW: Yesterday, the Democratic Alliance announced the names of candidates nominated to stand for election to party leadership roles at the upcoming Elective Federal Congress that is due to take place next month. What caught many people’s attention though was the name of Lungile Phenyane, simply because no one seems to know much about her and yet she availed herself for all six of the DA’s national leadership roles. However, the latest development is that she will no longer be contesting the party’s federal leader and federal finance chairperson positions. But she joins us now to talk about her leadership credentials and what she stands for as a political activist.

EASTERN CAPE BUDGET: On Tuesday, the Eastern Cape MEC for Finance Mlungisi Mvoko tabled his budget speech and announced that the province recorded an increase of 20 000 employed persons between the 3rd and 4th quarter of last year. The Education and Health Departments have once again received the biggest chunk of the provincial budget. The two departments were allocated more than R28 billion each out of the R89.6 billion budget. MEC Mvoko joins us now to unpack the provincial budget and to outline the province’s key priorities for this year.
