Samsung has revealed its fourth generation of the big screen foldable phones, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. The company has taken the past year refining the design of the foldable phone, making it more durable and more appealing to the wider smartphone market, while also improving its performance and cameras. For the first time ever, people have the choice of a smartphone form factor designed to maximize their life. Samsung reintroduced foldable phones with its Galaxy Fold in 2019 and the the Galaxy Z series provides tailored user experiences inside and out.

The Young Nurses Indaba Trade Union has been picketing outside the Northern Cape Department of Health. The only nursing college in the province is on the brink of shutting down. The is due to accreditation issues with the Council on Higher Education as well as the South African Nursing Council. The two accreditation bodies say the college lacks basic infrastructure and training resources. The Hendrietta Stockdale Nursing College serves many aspiring nurses from different communities in the Northern Cape, however, students are learning under very poor conditions. Union leaders and some members of staff at the college have met with Health MEC Maruping Matthews Lekwene. How did that meeting go?

Earlier on today, Stats SA issued the results of the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) for the second quarter of the year. These results indicate that 648 000 jobs were gained between the first quarter of 2022 and the second quarter of 2022. The biggest job gains were recorded in Community and Social Services (276 000), Trade (169 000), Finance (128 000) and Construction (104 000). However, there were job losses in Manufacturing (73 000) and Transport (54 000). To explain what these latest figures mean is….

A victory for members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa. The Constitutional Court has found in their favour after they were dismissed by their employer, Marley Pipes Systems. The employees participated in an unprotected strike where another employee was assaulted and were found guilty of assault based on common purpose. The Labour Court of Appeals  ruled that common purpose had been established because none of the 41 employees had intervened to stop the assault when it took place. The Constitutional Court has overturned that. It says mere presence and watching the assault does not satisfy the requirement set out in an earlier judgment on what constitutes common purpose. What precedent does this set? We are now joined by Wits University’s Professor Stephen Tuson.  

Former Kenyan Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, has filed his petition against the declaration of deputy president William Ruto as winner in the recent presidential race. Odinga, who was making his fifth bid for the top job, also approached the Supreme Court in August 2017, when President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the winner of the presidential race. The court annulled that election and ordered a re-run which was boycotted by Odinga and dozens of people died during a police crackdown on protests that erupted afterwards.

The movement of Nguni people from South Africa to different areas across the continent came to the spotlight this weekend during King Misuzulu’s traditional coronation ceremony. King M'Mbelwa from Malawi spoke at the ceremony, emphasising King MisuZulu’s responsibility to unite the Zulu kingdom and not differentiate between those who supported him and those who did not. King Mpezeni from Zambia also sent a delegation to the ceremony to congratulate the king. Other Nguni descendants can be found in Zimbabwe, Mozambique and DRC. The Department of Education in the Eastern Cape will for the first time in history translate grade 12 trial examinations into IsiXhosa and Sesotho. The papers for subjects being translated are Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Sciences, History, Agricultural Sciences and Accounting.
