a group of Kenyans who were forcefully evicted from their land by British settlers during colonial rule filed a case against the UK at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) to demand justice. The victims from the Talai and Kipsigis communities in Kericho County who suffered at the hands of the British colonialists number over 100,000. The Competition Commission says it has found possible 'opportunistic' increases in the price of sunflower oil. Competition watchdog’s report says sunflower oil processor prices increased by 72% in 2022, while the price of sunflower seeds remained relatively stable. It says the growing concentration along the sunflower oil value chain from sowing to refining has created a risk of opportunistic price increases that are above inflation increases.

SASSA has added new regulations in the process of administering the R350 Social Relief of Distress Grant. Recipients have to confirm they are still in need of the grant every three months. If they do not re-engage with SASSA every three months, it will be assumed they no longer require the grant.  There is also a requirement that recipients cannot unreasonably refuse to accept employment or educational opportunities. SASSA is working on reaching data sharing agreements with the Department of Public Works and the Department of Labour.

Health MEC in Limpopo Dr Phophi Ramathuba says the province’s health system is being abused by undocumented foreign nationals. In the clip posted on Twitter, Ramathuba can be seen telling a woman from Zimbabwe that her country must take responsibility for her health problems as her department does not have the budget to accommodate foreign nationals. The video has since generated mixed reactions, with some people criticising her and some supporting her stance on the matter. But was she correct in her approach though?

The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) says child hunger is worsening on the African continent, particularly in the Horn of Africa and the Sahel region. The organisation is estimating that more than 2.8 million children across both regions are already suffering from severe acute malnutrition, "which means they are up to 11 times more at risk of dying from water-borne diseases than well-nourished children". Yesterday we spoke to the Eastern Cape department of Basic Education with regards to their pilot project. The department will for the first time in history translate grade 12 trial examinations into IsiXhosa and Sesotho. The papers for subjects being translated are Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Sciences, History, Agricultural Sciences and Accounting. This is government’s bid to elevate indigenous languages. Many of you said it would be a hard project to do, considering the fact that teachers don’t yet have the vocabulary since they were also taught in English. What are some of the socio-linguistic and language planning requirements that need to be met in order to make projects like these a success? We are now joined by Dr Yanga Majola, Socio-linguist and lecturer at the Tshwane University of Technology. Dr Majola has done extensive work on language use in the Eastern Cape.
