The Congress of the People has placed party president Mosiuoa Lekota on suspension for sowing divisions within the party and for alleged corruption and promoting the removal of elected leaders. Cope revealed today that the party’s national leadership advised Lekota on several occasions that given his lack of energy and strength to lead the party, he must step back. Civil Society organisation, DearSA will litigate against government in a bid to limit Health Minister, Dr Joe Phaahla’s powers under the planned amendment to the National Health Act. The NGO says if not challenged, the health minister will have powers to enforce regulations while bypassing public scrutiny. Earlier today, assets worth R75 million belonging to former police officials which include luxurious homes in Sandton and Pretoria, were seized by the NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit. According to the NPA, the assets include at least 19 immovable properties linked to the accused as well as approximately 115 vehicles which includes 3 trucks. NPA’s Investigating Directorate spokesperson Sindisiwe Seboka says the unit is not done yet as investigations are ongoing to trace further assets. She joins us now to elaborate further on this……

Minister of Water and Sanitation Senzo Mchunu just gave an update on the state of water and sanitation to mark one year since he took over the portfolio. According to him, dam levels across the country are stable and only the Eastern Cape and some parts of the Western Cape remain a huge concern due to persistent drought that continues to affect these two provinces negatively.

THE INNVERVIEW: Today we focus on the state of the Eastern Cape, asking – Is there a political will to address the province’s socio economic challenges?  

Just two days ago, Stats SA revealed that the province has the highest unemployment rate in the country. Also what is perplexing is the fact that in the past ten years, Eastern Cape hasn’t improved that much as it remains trapped in structural poverty that negatively affects the province’s socio-economic profile. But what is even more disappointing is the fact that the province is home to many influential political leaders who contributed immensely in the liberation struggle for our freedom, hence it is often referred to as the home of legends. Another worrying trend is that more and more skilled people are leaving the province, something that does not bode well for the region’s economic prospects.

Following several media reports about the death of a 15-year-old Soweto boy. The SA Human Rights Commission has decided to investigate the circumstances around his death. It is reported that Tiro Maolusi committed suicide after his teacher allegedly mocked his sexuality.

The community of Hambanathi and surrounding areas in Tongaat in Kwazulu-Natal took to the streets today, barricading roads and torching a water tank. The angry residents say they have not had clean water in months. Supply of water in the area was interrupted by floods that damaged infrastructure, including local water treatment plants.
