The health department has gazetted limited Covid-19 regulations with effect from today. This follows the expiry of the 30-day extension of Covid-19 regulations at midnight on Wednesday. Here’s what’s interesting, mask mandates continue to be compulsory indoors, however, this does not apply to children in classrooms. With regards to international travel, those coming into the country must produce a vaccination certificate or a negative Covid-19 test that was taken 72 hours prior to travel. Those who cannot produce both, will be subjected to a test at the port of entry and be asked to isolate if they test positive. This does not apply to children under the age of 12 as well as travellers who commute to South Africa from neighbouring countries daily.

Afriforum and DearSA say they will be heading to court to challenge any regulations that aim to make  the temporary Covid-19 rules permanent. The organisations say the regulations cannot be justified and should be reviewed. They are also raising concerns about government’s handling of the public participation process as government seeks to amend the National Health Act.

Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga says South African schools need comprehensive sexuality education to try and fight against increasing pregnancy rate amongst teenagers, HIV as well as gender based violence. Motshekga was addressing the UN educational, scientific and cultural organisation on Wednesday. South Africa saw a surge in teenage pregnancies during lockdown in 2020 and 2021. She says her department will intensify the implementation of comprehensive sexuality education in a bid to empower young people. Currently schools do incorporate some form of sex education through life orientation, but the situation in South Africa continues to get worse. How comprehensive does education need to be in order to change human behaviour?

Aspen Pharmacare says its Covid-19 vaccine plant in Gqeberha might have to close down due to lack of orders. A caller yesterday asked why the Western Cape government refers to its MECs as ministers. My view was that it is not illegal as they may be wanting to put emphasis on the importance of the title. The Western Cape’s Minister of Agriculture, Ivan Meyer responded to me on tweet saying the province has its own constitution and it refers to the executive council as provincial ministers. Sibanye Still-water has finally broken silence on its decision to pay its CEO R300 million at the end of 2021. The company’s Senior Vice President of Investor Relations, James Wellsted defended the decision, saying it was due to the company’s great share price performance as well as wanting to compete with what CEOs in the same industry across the world are earning. Wellsted was interviewed on SAFM’s Moneyweb Market Update by Money’s managing editor Ryk Van Niekerk last night. The company’s workers have been on strike for almost 2 months, demanding a R1000 salary increase. Energy minister Gwede Mantashe will meet with the company and unions on Thursday after President Cyril Ramaphosa was booed off state by workers on Sunday.
