The case against the three suspects linked to the murder of Hillary Gardee has been postponed to 9 June. The case was postponed after all three suspects decided to abandon their bail application. The suspects face charges of murder, conspiracy to murder, kidnapping, rape, possession of firearms and defeating the ends of justice.

Nigeria's airlines say they have called off a plan to ground domestic flights as negotiations with the government are continuing. Last week, the airlines announced its plans to suspend all flights (starting from today) over rising jet fuel prices. Since March, domestic flights have been disrupted as some started to cancel internal schedules while others delayed operations, citing scarcity of jet fuel. The mining industry will gather in Cape Town next week as the Mining Indaba makes its face-to-face return after Covid-19 interruptions. President Cyril Ramaphosa and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa will be in attendance. The Mining Indaba comes back at a very interesting time in the South African mining industry. Just last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa was booed off stage by workers at a Workers Day event as he was trying to address them. The point of contention being a R1000 salary increase demanded by gold mineworkers at Sibanye-Stillwaters who have been on strike for over two months. Energy Minister, Gwede Mantashe met with the company and unions yesterday. Unions insist there is still a standoff with the company as they refuse to pay beyond R850 a month. It's gloves off in the Eastern Cape this weekend as 1500 delegates will decide who will take the province forward in their elective conference. The conference was initially scheduled to sit last month, but was postponed to the disappointment of many due to non-completion of internal disputes. The race this year is between current provincial chairperson Oscar Mabuyane who is also the Eastern Cape premier and treasurer, Babalo Madikizela. Next week AfriForum will head to court to appeal the ruling of the Southern Gauteng High Court that was handed down in 2019 – that says displaying the 1928 flag (the old South African flag) amounts to hate speech. According to them the fact that the old flag is offensive to some people is not sufficient reason to declare it hate speech.

Today we speak to Dr Cho Ayaba about the current state of the Federal Republic of Ambazonia (which is not yet officially recognised). Ayaba is the President of the Ambazonia Governing Council which is the leading liberation movement behind the Ambazonia War of Independence (AWI). Since 2017, Cameroon's mainly English-speaking Northwest and Southwest regions have been rocked by violence after separatists declared the independence of Ambazonia. The conflict started due to authorities in Cameroon mandating the use of French in English-language schools and courts in 2016. Several attempts have been made to end the separatist conflict in the country's Anglophone provinces, however those attempts have failed as nothing much has changed.
