In his Human Rights Day address yesterday, President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke about the employment of foreigners and how this can create social tensions in South Africa. He also cautioned the way that we voice our grievances when we have problems with people from other countries. Ramaphosa condemned the acts of the various Duduala formations saying that they are contravening the law. He went on to say such formations are embarking on vigilantism and that if not addressed, this will result in another spate of xenophobic attacks which will be detrimental to our relationship with the rest of the continent

Should we be concerned that South Africa’s top four cities have been listed among the most violent cities in the world? According to the Mexican Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice’s list of the 50 most violent cities in the world which was published recently – our four cities, namely; Cape Town, Joburg, Durban and Gqeberha feature among the most violent cities in the world. The same report also shows that Cape Town is ranked as the 11th most violent city, followed by Gqeberha at 23,  Durban in 35th place and Johannesburg ranking in at 48th.

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) and Free the Children - Save the Nation commemorated Human Rights Day by marching to the Union Buildings in opposition to mandatory vaccinations. As companies have begun implementing mandatory vaccination policies as part of the fight against Covid-19, ACDP leader Reverend Kenneth Meshoe says the constitution protects people from mandatory vaccinations and the purpose of their march is to highlight the freedom of choice.

The ACDP says it has been approached by various groups for assistance over vaccine mandates.

The Cape Winelands’ Robertson has been seeing violent clashes between two foreign national groups from Zimbabwe and Lesotho. It has been alleged that Zimbabweans are taking jobs from Lesotho nationals on local farms. These clashes started last week, the SAPS has been deployed to the area and they have confirmed that a number of individuals sustained injuries. The Commercial Stevedore Agricultural and Allied Workers Union (CSAAWU) has condemned the violence which has forced 200 people, mostly women and children, to evacuate the area and seek refuge at a nearby police station. The union says the violence is a direct result of labour rights violations in the agricultural sector and the exploitation of immigrant farmworkers.

The LeanOnMe awareness campaign against the abuse and misuse of codeine is hosting an art, sport, and recreational day with the purpose of giving local youths an opportunity to showcase their talent. This is in an attempt to encourage local youth to rather lean on their talent when in need of an escape rather than being tempted to lean on the substance LEAN. LEAN is a mixture of cough syrup and a fizzy drink which creates a substance that can have serious effects on the brain. It has been a couple of years since LEAN gained prominence amongst the youth of South Africa and the campaign’s approach to communities, media platforms and social media, will teach the youth about the consequences they will have to live with when abusing drugs.

Hundreds of Tshwane families in Woodlands, east of Pretoria have been left homeless after a massive fire destroyed their homes. According to Tshwane Emergency Services firefighters managed to contain the blaze at around 1.38am and fully extinguished the fire at about 3.30am on Sunday.

Access to drinking water is a fundamental human right, recognised by the United Nations General Assembly. But millions are not enjoying this right in South Africa. It is estimated that 16 million people do not have access to adequate sanitation, while 3.5 million people do not have access to safe drinking water. But not everybody is taking it lying down. Seven villages outside Mthatha in the Eastern Cape have taken the O.R. Tambo District Municipality to court, demanding access to clean drinking water.
