  • Overcoming Self Sabotage with Joe Rignola

Today I’ll visit more with my business partner Joe and we’ll touch on his experience with “brain zaps” as he calls them, finding what to do with life, and finding success after decades of self-sabotage.

Joe Rignola is an entrepreneur, filmmaker, and best-selling author. He began his own health journey about 15 years ago while dealing with depression, severe digestive issues, weight gain, and blood sugar dysregulation. After researching alternatives to the medications he was on, Joe was able to take control of his health and lose over 45 pounds by changing his diet and lifestyle. Filled with gratitude for his newfound health and energy, Joe went back to school to study health and nutrition so he could help others along their journey. In 2009 he founded Wellness Punks and began coaching clients 1-on-1, and in 2011 he launched his first online event called The Primal Cooking Workshop. This innovative event was part health summit, part cooking show, and featured some of the most well-known names in the paleo and primal space.

After reaching tens of thousands of people with that single event, Joe dove headfirst into online events. Since then he’s launched, founded, and co-founded some of the most successful brands and events in wellness over the past decade.

  • I Diagnosed Myself with Dementia with Dr. Kat Toups

In this episode I’ll chat with Dr. Kat Toups.  Dr. Toups had worked with many clinical trials treatments for Alzheimer’s and after some struggles with autoimmune issues and allergies, she ended up catching her own memory loss when administering memory tests for patients.  After she discovered Functional Medicine, she was able to turn things around and reverse degenerative brain disease for herself and for patients.

Kat Toups, MD is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (the highest honor bestowed by the APA), Board-Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and previously boarded in Geriatric Psychiatry. She is also a Certified Practitioner with the Institute for Functional Medicine.

Dr. Toups was formerly an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at U.C. Davis, where she was the Inpatient Residency Training Director and later the founder and Medical Director of the Bay Area Research Institute, a Clinical Trials Research Center in Lafayette, California, for 12 years. After serving as the Principal Investigator on over 100 clinical trials, including 20 failed trials for Alzheimer's medications, she realized that the elusive cure for brain and psychiatric illness was not going to be found in a pill.

In 2009, Dr. Toups attended a “Food as Medicine” conference that opened her eyes to the power of nutritional interventions and learned about Functional Medicine. She went on to complete all of the advanced training for certification at the Institute for Functional Medicine, and many other additional functional and environmental medicine trainings. Her practice is now devoted exclusively to functional medicine psychiatry and functional approaches for treating cognitive impairment and dementia.

Dr. Toups was a contributing author to the academic textbook Integrative Therapies for Depression: Redefining Models for Assessment, Treatment, and Prevention published in 2015 by CRC Press, and wrote a chapter, Decoding Dementia, in the book Life 201: A One-Stop Shop for Your Health, Wealth, and Happiness as part of a project for a PBS fund-raiser.

She has been a featured speaker at national and international medical conferences on Dementia and Functional Medicine Psychiatry topics, as well as a frequent guest on podcasts and summits.

She has recently completed collaborating with Dr. Dale Bredesen on a prospective clinical trial using a functional medicine method to reverse mild cognitive impairment and early dementia, and the study publication is expected in 2021.

Dr. Toups is also the author of an upcoming book, Dementia Demystified: The Definitive Guide to Resurrecting Your Brain, Reversing Cognitive Decline, and Regaining Your Memory.

  • From Hospice to Thriving with Dr. Al Danenberg

Today we’re visiting with Dr. Al Danenberg.  Dr. Al suffered a stroke at the age of 59 and was doing okay for the next few years, but he was still on 7 medications. At the age of 66, he discovered the Paleo lifestyle and was able to lose 30 pounds and get off of all of his medications.

Fast forward a few more years, and he started having some pains that he thought was a sprain or tear.  An MRI showed multiple fractures and a mass on his spine, and soon he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

This brought him to research more kinds of unconventional cancer protocols, which had much better results than chemo would have.  He had a horrible accident with his brittle bones and went into hospice, intending to die.  After being evacuated to his home in the midst of Hurricane Dorian, his wife gave him some tough love and he rallied.  By the next month he was able to walk back into his oncologist’s office and start a new medication.  His next PET scan showed no active cancer cells through his entire body.  Today, he’s thriving, although he has many limitations and is not cured.

As a dentist, Dr. Al has been exposed to a lot of low-level radiation, which is known to turn lymphocytes cancerous, as well as using mercury amalgam fillings for many years.  Dentists in his age range have a much higher occurrence of cancer than other professions.

Mercury fillings are a health time bomb.  If you have mercury fillings, IAOMT.org to find a dentist in your area certified in removing mercury fillings safely.

To connect more with Dr. Al, visit his website and social media channels:

    https://drdanenberg.com/

    https://www.facebook.com/draldanenberg/

    https://www.instagram.com/dr.danenberg/

Dr. Danenberg goes by “Dr. Al”. He is a periodontist and was in private practice for 44 years. He incorporated ancestral nutrition & lifestyle with his leading-edge laser protocol to treat periodontal disease.

Dr. Al consults with patients all over the world (virtually via Zoom or Skype) regarding animal-based nutrition, lifestyle, oral & overall health, and the importance of a healthy gut and immune system. He also includes his Unconventional Cancer Protocols since he was diagnosed with incurable bone marrow cancer in September 2018 and was given only 3-6 months to live. Dr. Al rejected all chemotherapy and is thriving today.

In June 2014, Dr. Al received the Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner (CFMP) designation as well as the certification as a Certified Primal Health Coach. In 2015, he was appointed to the faculty of the College of Integrative Medicine and created the college’s integrative periodontal teaching module. Then, in April 2017, Dr. Al earned the designation of “ADAPT Trained Health Professional” from Kresser Institute.

In July 2017, Elektra Press released his book, “Crazy-Good Living”, which is based on ancestral nutrition and lifestyle.

On April 14, 2020, Dr. Al was appointed the Chair of the Periodontal Committee for the International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine (IABDM). He also created the Certification Course offered by the IABDM, which will bestow the designation of Certified Biological Nutritional Dental Professional after successful completion of the program. This is the first certification of its kind.

In August 2020, he published two mini-eBooks on Amazon for download: “Better Belly Blueprint” and “Is Your Gut Killing You?”

In November 2020, NutriSense offered Dr. Danenberg a position on its Advisory Board, and in January 2021, Dr. Al became a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for Revitin Natural Toothpaste.

  • Forgiving Yourself with Dr. Keesha Ewers

In this episode we’re visiting with Dr. Keesha Ewers, who struggled with rheumatoid arthritis as an embodiment of repressed sexual abuse. In her study of Ayurvedic medicine, she has found that most people with autoimmune disease have the 4 Ps present:

    1. Holding on to poison from past pain
    2. People pleasing
    3. Perfectionism
    4. Pitta of the Ayurvedic dosha spectrum

What can happen with undigested trauma, even seemingly insignificant events get meanings and actions attached to them.  Those subconscious beliefs usually can’t be fixed by yourself.  The mind that created the belief can’t fix it.  As Dr. Keesha says, sometimes you need to borrow a brain that is trained to see patterns, such as a therapist, to resolve the issues.

Later, Dr. Keesha was diagnosed with breast cancer and she was immediately able to see that the tumor came from her self-hatred over something that had happened to her children.  She had done the work to help them heal and forgive, but hadn’t forgiven herself.

Dr. Keesha Ewers is an integrative medicine expert, Doctor of Sexology, Family Practice ARNP, Psychotherapist, herbalist, is board certified in functional medicine and Ayurvedic medicine, and is the founder and medical director of the Academy for Integrative Medicine Health Coach Certification Program.

Dr. Keesha has been in the medical field for over 30 years. After conducting the HURT Study in 2013 (Healing Un-Resolved Trauma), she developed the HURT Model for understanding how past childhood trauma impacts adult health. This led to the creation of the You Unbroken online program for patients to heal their own trauma and the Mystic Medicine deep immersion healing retreats she leads at her home on San Juan Island, WA.

Dr. Keesha is a popular speaker, including at Harvard and from the TEDx stage, and the best-selling author of Solving the Autoimmune Puzzle: The Woman’s Guide to Reclaiming Emotional Freedom and Vibrant Health, The Quick and Easy Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook: Anti-Inflammatory Recipes with 7 Ingredients or Less for Busy People, and Your Libido Story: A workbook for women who want to find, fix, and free their sexual desire.
