Before a major auto accident in 2020, I worked as a senior business analyst for one of the largest small business consulting firms in America (Global Resources, LLC). I am currently a disabled individual on social security disability benefits. I use a manual (non-powered) wheelchair to get around. As someone who lives with a genetic condition called Osteogenesis Imperfecta Type 1 and gets around in a wheelchair, I've experienced firsthand the challenges that come with living with a disability in a society that isn't always accommodating.

But today's episode is about something else entirely: the time I got banned from Oaklawn Casino for life.

You might be wondering how someone who is passionate about disability rights and education could possibly get banned from a casino. Well, it all started when I had the idea to host a charity event at the casino to benefit disabled students and veterans.

I reached out to Oaklawn's management with my proposal, thinking that they would be excited to help me raise money for a good cause. But instead, they told me that I wasn't welcome at the casino and that I was banned for life.

I was shocked and hurt by their decision, especially since I had planned the event with the intention of helping people in need. It's hard to understand why Oaklawn would turn away someone who was trying to do good in the world.

But unfortunately, discrimination against people with disabilities is still all too common. Despite the fact that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed over 30 years ago, there are still many barriers that prevent disabled individuals from fully participating in society.

In my case, it seems that Oaklawn Casino was unwilling to make the necessary accommodations for someone with a disability. But this isn't just a problem in the world of casinos - it's an issue that affects disabled individuals in all aspects of life, from education to employment to transportation.

So in this episode, we'll be exploring the broader issues surrounding disability rights and accessibility. We'll be talking about the progress that has been made since the passage of the ADA, as well as the work that still needs to be done to create a truly inclusive society.

We'll also be discussing my own personal experiences with disability and the challenges that I've faced as a disabled individual trying to navigate the world. And we'll delve deeper into the details of my encounter with Oaklawn Casino, examining why they might have made the decision to ban me and what this says about the broader issue of disability discrimination.
