  • How to Read the Bible: Luke 24

In this episode of How to Read the Bible, Nate Claiborne and Benjamin Kandt discuss the importance of Luke 24. Ben introduces the idea of reading all of Scripture through the lens of "Messiah" and "Mission." • How to Read the Bible: Isaiah

In this episode of How to Read the Bible, Nate Claiborne and Jonathan Duckett discuss the book of Isaiah. Sometimes referred to as the "5th Gospel" Isaiah is an introduction to the prophetic literature and a case study in making sense of double fulfillments in poetic prophecy.

For more resources, the chapter on Isaiah in A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the Old Testament: The Gospel Promised is helpful for understanding the structure of the book. An accessible commentary on Isaiah is John Oswalt's in the NIV Application Commentary series. also useful is Alec Motyer's volume in the Tyndale Old Testament Commentary series. There are actually two Bible Project videos on Isaiah. The first is covers chapters 1-39: https://youtu.be/d0A6Uchb1F8. The second covers chapters 40-66: https://youtu.be/_TzdEPuqgQg.

  • How to Read the Bible: Song of Songs in History

In this episode, Nate Claiborne talks with Dr. Mike Allen about the history of interpretation of Song of Songs. While our modern impulse might be to reserve Song of Songs for teaching on sex and marriage, most Christians have treated it as primarily about hour relationship with God. Dr. Allen explains why this is the case and traces early Jewish and Christian readings up through the Puritans. He helps us to see how some of  the more awkward parts for modern people (e.g. the physical descriptions the lovers have for each other) are actually a way that we can see the gospel in Song of Songs in a way that is not presented elsewhere in Scripture.

  • How to Read the Bible: Song of Songs 2-3

In this episode, Nate Claiborne and Benjamin Kandt discuss reading Song of Songs devotionally. Ben highlights some of his journal entries from Song of Songs 2 & 3.  If you missed the introduction to Song of Songs, you can listen to that episode here.

The translation by Robert Alter that Ben mentioned (and that we will keep referencing) is available either in his 3 volume Old Testament set, or as part of his Strong as Death is Love, which includes Ruth, Esther, Jonah, and Daniel.

Nate would recommend interested readers check out Iain Duguid's commentary on Song of Songs which is very helpful for Christ-centered devotional reading. Ben recommends these lectures from Michael Reeves (whom he mentioned).

  • How to Read the Bible: Song of Songs

In this episode, Nate Claiborne and Josh Kessler discuss Song of Solomon, or Song of Songs. On the one hand, it ancient Hebrew love poetry. On the other hand, it is part of Scripture and should be read in light of Christ. Doing this well will require attentive readers to read it both in its ancient context and its ultimate Christian context as well.

As always, the chapter on Song of Songs in A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the Old Testament: The Gospel Promised is helpful for understanding the structure of the book. Two commentaries by Iain Duguid are helpful as well. The first is his entry in the Tyndale Old Testament Commentary series, which covers literary, historical, and cultural details, while also aiding devotional readings. The other is his entry in the Reformed Expository Commentary series, which is based on a series of sermons he preached. Also useful in that vein is Douglas Sean O'Donnell's volume in the Preaching the Word Commentary series.

In addition, there are actually two Bible Project videos on Song of Songs. The first is like the others we’ve recommended: https://youtu.be/4KC7xE4fgOw. The other is different visual overview, also worth checking out: https://youtu.be/WJgt1vRkPbI.
